pfrederi 18,393 #1 Posted May 27, 2017 Been wondering a bit about 1960's model numbers. Last digit is the year...That makes sense lead digits Horsepower...that makes sense middle digit 0 = Recoil start... Sort of makes sense 5 = Electric start... Huh?? 7 = Hydro... Huh??? So what happened to 1-4 and 6. Why 5 for electric and 7 for hydro????
SPINJIM 1,984 #2 Posted May 27, 2017 Good question. Just a guess, but I think 3 was used to describe the 3 forward speeds on some early models (eg. model 633), and maybe they intended to use 6 for the 6 forward speeds that came later. Then they changed their mind, decided the use '-8' to include the reverse speeds. That's one of those questions that I wish Cecil was still with us so we could ask him. oldredrider 2,553 #5 Posted May 27, 2017 Supposedly represented 6 speed transmission. Even had the hood decal with "six speed".
953 nut 58,335 #6 Posted May 27, 2017 I have heard that there was another company that had applied for a trademark for "Six Speed" and that is why called it an eight speed and dropped the "6" second digit. As with any rule in wheel horse nomenclature; there are always exceptions.
