I think the mystery has been solved. I found my serial number listed in the manuals section, and according to the listing, mine is a 1964 Model 854. So I guess I will be looking for an 8HP Kohler instead of converting the 7HP Kohler pull start engine that came with it.

When you posted the serial number I went looking to see where it would fit in and added it to the list.

That's what I figured as well. Seems hard to say for certain sometimes.

Yup, you're absolutely right. Now I'm thinking it was a leftover decal :)

Many years ago I had an 854. What a great tractor. I had seepage issues with the tank and considered replacing it with an older one piece. But I ended up replacing the gasket and using a liquid tank sealant I found at a motorcycle shop that you put in the tank and spread it around.. Of course I only had to slosh it around the bottom edge. That worked perfectly for many, many years.

But, I have a solid nose hood that apparently will be one inch short with the 8hp engine in it!

Gadzooks! I forgot about that. Maybe Garry can give us some insight as to why the serial # fits in so neatly.

I am sure it is not the original hood for it, too many details on the tractor place it as a very late 63 or early 64. As far as I can tell, the solid hood was only used in 61 (?). So, I will be cleaning it up, get it in primer, and be looking to swap for the correct hood at some point.

Also remember what the previous owners did over the past 55+ years. That's part of the mystic of these little red tractors. I can't count the number of times I've cringed at hearing 'original this.....original that'......who really knows unless that person uncrated it. Some things we know but most are..well, let's say folklore. I grew up with Wheel Horses since 1960. We'd all cringe at what owners did to them decades ago, me especially because I was one of them. I love seeing the guys who strive for factory original but your tractor is a classic example. A fine tractor that has a history that creates so many great conversations. :)

Its a 701 hood. Leave the hood the way it is and put it up for trade for a 62-64 hood. I'm sure someone will do a straight-up swap with you.

I am sure this one has a story for sure. It has a 7hp Tecumseh on it, held on by two bolts right now. The front of the tractor and front of the engine including the air filter housing have a thin mocha colored residue on it. The engine will turn about 350 degrees in either direction, and then "clunk". I would venture a guess that someone drove it into a ditch filled with muddy water and hydrolocked it.

So far the only thing that is not a 64 is the hood and motor. If you have a solid battery tray base its a 64, If you have the 5 bolt hubs its a 64. Your hood stand assembly is specific to a 64.

DTOM, you are correct on both counts.

So basically the 857 will get parted. Almost hate to do that, but

Consider it an Organ Donor;  that is a very noble thing for any :wh: to do!

953 nut, I almost hate to, it looks like this, runs and drives great. It just has some minor incorrect parts issues.
