Nice Horse! Love the older Kohlers. 12 hp is great!

Rattle may be the tension pulley under the belt guard. I'm sure others'll know for sure.

Is your 48" deck missing the height indexing lever?

Be sure to post your progress. Excellent Horse!

The tension pulley is old and probably worn.  Two fixes for this.  1.  get a new pulley or 2.  move the foot rest (which the belt guard is attached to) out a bit so the guard is not as close to the pulley

Thanx for the come backs guys. Not a bad wrench here, old Harley's. old farm tractors, etc. With the advice I get here I'm bettin me & the 312-8 are gonna have an outstanding mowing season & many more to follow. TM, love the patch--I was a Navy Combat Corpsman FMT attached to 3rd Marines -did 2 tours over to the Nam--64-66--Semper-Fi my brother. Not sure on the height index lever???

Fred: Here's a link to your mower deck parts.

Looked like your deck, 48" SD missing part numbers on the drawing #34, #35, #36. Or I just couldn't see 'em in your picture.

Looks like your height is  bolted in place. I never move the lever on my decks, they're where I want 'em.

Didn't know 'bout the Sullivan brothers when I joined. I was a 4-year volunteer but Nam was a no go.

All was good and yes Squid, preferred the LPH (my sea legs were fairly decent) over dirty trails with my M14 and M1911 A1. :ROTF:

TM, I'm figuring the parts-34--35--36  in the parts pix you sent--would enable me to adjust the deck height on the move instead of the permanent bolt that I have in mine?? For the record--we don't do convenient here in Freetown!!:text-lol: BUT, thanx for bringin it to my attention--got me lookin closer at the deck hook up. Drizzlin here all day.

Fred, Correct. The handle is spring loaded, pull to one side, push forward or back and release the pin on the arm into a different hole (height adjust).

Perhaps you could make one? Back in my shop days I made a lot of Horse parts, mostly used 316L stainless steel. :handgestures-thumbupright:

Thanx TM, I'd bet I got something down to the barn kickin around I can finagle into something that'll work. That spring in the diagram  is only 75 cents. That would be hard to match up. Thanx again buddy.

I know they're on opposite sides of the deck but would the adjustment lever from a 42" fit a 48"??

:text-welcomewave: to :rs: Fred... That's a nice :wh: you scored.  I hope you like it here as much as I do.  There is more help and good advice than you can imagine and it's all there just for the asking.  I understand the cyber dumb and puter dumb part also.  I think it has something to do with our age.  I too was in Nam, one tour 65-66, with the 168th Combat Engineers.  We were stationed in Dian, a city near Saigon.  I can't believe we didn't run into one another!!! :ROTF:
