D 160

Recommended Posts

Hello, I will be picking up my D 160 this week. It has been sitting for 5 years or more but fired right up after putting a bit of gas in the carb.

I have a couple of questions that I hope you can help with:

- how do I find the year? I have the serial number 61-60S01-11985-6061.

- it has a rear pto, what can I run from this Pto?

-i want to add a loader to this, it has a hydraulic pump. Does anyone have plans they can share?

- I paid $800 for the tractor and tiller, mower deck and snowblower. Is that a fair price, it also comes with a spare Onan motor.

What should I do for maintenance since it's been sitting so long?

Thanks, looking forward to this site.

Trevor, that's a steal, even if it didn't run well.  The implements alone should be worth more than that if they are in good working condition.  You did not mention if you were able to test the hydro system and check if it has plenty of power to spin the rear wheels when it is butted up against a solid object like a tree.  The spare Onan is a keeper as parts can be hard to get sometimes.  You already have the tiller, the other thing that can be ran from the rear PTO is a 60 inch finish mower.   Mark.

I put a deposit down so will pick it up this week. I didn't drive it yet... but I will test the hydro system. If It does not have the power, what is worst case scenario for the hydro?  Cost? Simple fixes?

The steering does have play and did see in other posts that steering is a common problem. Not sure what to check/fix?

Knowing that the hydro is a split system, the worst case may be that some wear is present on the valve plates (pump & transaxle motor) which consequently is only rectified via disassembly and reconditioning or replacing them. This is not a simple task, as access is accomplished by removal and disassembly of other parts along the way, then reassembling everything while keeping all the internal parts clean.

Here is a start. You are missing one number in the model number.

Awesome. Looks like the tractor was built on a Monday. I hope it was a good Monday.

The PTO on the D's is kinda an oddball in that it turns at 3000rpm where most turn a 550-75 (I think!) but --- since you are getting the tiller that is sorta a non issue.

No help on a FEL, the D's had them but are pretty darn scarce.

$800 is a pretty darn good price (if no baddies crop up)

It has an Onan in it now, right? (been nice to get the Kohler, theyre sweet) The Onan had/has some quirks, valve problems and overheating first come to mind. Take the sheet metal off from around the engine and make sure all is clean of chaff (or maybe even a rats nest after sitting that long:rolleyes:) they are prone to get buildup in there and cause overheating. Probably gonna have to go into the carb and clean after that long, and likely need new fuel lines, also inspect the tank to see in any gunk has formed in it and clean out - dont want that gooky stuff running up to the carb. Change fluids in engine and tranny, and lube everything up nicely. Hopefully you'll be ready to go....

Ive got 3 of the 'Big D's' and I really love them...

Any comments about the steering play?

You can probably turn the wheel about a 1/5 of a full turn until the steering starts to catch and turn the wheels.

The loader will have to have its own hydraulic pump it doesn't run off the sundstrand unit that powers the tractor the mid mount and 3 point.

The steering column is a Ross unit also used by JD and other manufactures.  There is an adjustment if you have skinny enough fingers (the rear PTO makes access very hard).

You might have to consider leaving 1/5th turn alone:(.. While they can be rebuilt, to get to it is a nightmare. As frederi mentioned with the rear PTO on yours either it will have to be removed - which is a bit## or all of the dash tower removed which is also a ##itch (I've never tried the dash method, but could probably be done) just to get to the column. Actually repair of it once on the bench is relatively straight forward and inexpensive.

As mentioned its a "Ross" unit - do a search here and on google and you can find all sorts of info on them. 1/5 turn probably isnt all that bad. even when rebuilt it will still have a bit of slop - 1/8-1/4 or so turn is common.
