pgd72 0 #1 Posted January 21, 2009 I purchased a 1996 520 H last November. This is the first hydro transmition I have owned. Here is my question. When the ground speed lever is moved into the forward position it tends to want to move back towards neutral. When it is in reverse it stays put. I assume this in not normal. Is there an adjustment that I could do to prevent this from happening or is this a more serious problem? Thanks in advance.
Duff 206 #2 Posted January 21, 2009 Hi, pgd72! I'm not a tranny man, but someone will be along shortly to help you out. You might also try our "search" feature, as I think this has been discussed before. Glad you found us, and welcome aboard! Where do you hail from? Oh, yeah...... Teddy da Bear 11 #3 Posted January 21, 2009  Glad this question was asked as my C-195 does approximately the same thing. Move the lever foward and go....after a moment the lever creeps back a little. I have to "hold it" all the way forward to go at maximum speed.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,643 #4 Posted January 21, 2009 It may need adjusting - here's the procedure for my C-141 Automatic - which has the Sundstrand unit in it. It may be different for the Eatons. Motion Control Friction Adjustment The speed control lever is friction-loaded to hold any selected speed in either direction. If the lever does not remain where it is set during operation, adjust as follows: 1. Remove controls cover plate. 2. Release large locknut. See Fig. 5-1 1. 3. Tighten friction collar to desired spring friction. 4. Tighten large locknut. The proper amount of friction is obtained when approximately 6 Ibs. (1.4 N) of force at the top of the handle moves the control lever. The friction collar is self-lubricating and does not require added lubrication. I'll try and dig up the one for the Eaton. kpinnc 15,671 #5 Posted January 21, 2009 On the 500 series tractors, there is a friction setup on the cam under the seat. There are no covers to remove. The Sundstrand procedure will NOT work. They do sometimes need to be tightened up due to wear, but more than likely someone used grease on it. The manual specifies you should never do that. You should be able to download your owner's manual from Toro.com with just the tractor part number on the tag under the seat. It has the friction and creep adjustment procedure in it. It's a pretty simple procedure. Good luck!

pgd72 0 #8 Posted January 22, 2009 Boy was that easy. It took about 10 seconds to make the necessary adjustment. I feel like an idiot. :imstupid: Thanks T-Mo and Kpinnc for the help.

kpinnc 15,671 #10 Posted January 22, 2009 I feel like an idiot. Nah, don't do that. Your question was legit. There are some... ahem... silly questions posted on occasion, but I am one of the folks who posted them! Glad you got it all straightened out! Kevin
