Old Iron 0 #1 Posted January 21, 2009 This is how the battery was jimmy rigged when I got the tractor. I would like to clean up this mess and make it look more like it did originaly. The battery is smaller then the original and I would like to clean up the look. How have you guys fastened them in place?
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted January 21, 2009 The first thing you'll have to do is lose the lawn & garden battery and replace it with a correct battery for that tractor. I can't remember what the group number is, but I have a 1990 Ford Ranger battery in my 1056 and it fits perfect. Once you have the correct battery, you can make a new strap to hold it in place from a piece of 1/8" X
coolhandblack 45 #3 Posted January 21, 2009 I have a 1276... I have a Lawn and Garden battery in it. I used a tarp strap and wrapped it around the battery and the stering column. You really cant see it. I actually tried to use the battery out of my wifes ford focus and it would not fit...
Old Iron 0 #4 Posted January 21, 2009 The first thing you'll have to do is lose the lawn & garden battery and replace it with a correct battery for that tractor. It seems to work fine. When I bought it I didn't relize it would be considered the wrong one. The previous owner drained the battery that was in it trying to start it, so I went to TSC and picked up this one. I had to do a quick tune up and she started right up!! Do you have any makes/models of batterys that will be correct? Thanks for your help.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,602 #5 Posted January 21, 2009 John, Here's a thread from last year about car batteries and Wheel Horses: http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?...&hl=car+battery Pay particular attention to TT's posts as he gives dimensions and battery numbers. TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #6 Posted January 21, 2009 John, a lawn & garden battery is powerful enough to start your 1057, but they are not correct for the large tray on the older tractors. (That's why you had to shim it so it would be secured.) An alternative would be to install a battery tray from a B-80/100 or a '74 to '77 C series tractor that originally used a smaller battery.
Old Iron 0 #7 Posted January 21, 2009 Thanks for the info T-mo and TT. And also for your patients with a "noobie". I can't take credit for the beautiful shim job. It was the previous owner who did the handy work. I admit I was a bit impatient. I ran out and bought an inexpensive battery so I didn't have to jump start it every time.
