Old Iron 0 #1 Posted January 21, 2009 This is from 42 years of the fuel line rubbing against it!! Probably less because it looks like the previous owner has since wire tied it over to the side. Was the original fuel line rubber? The one on it now is.
TT-(Moderator) 1,169 #2 Posted January 21, 2009 That didn't happen from the fuel line rubbing it - that happened because the tag is aluminum and it was eaten away by galvanic corrosion. Yes - the fuel line was originally a rubber hose.
Old Iron 0 #3 Posted January 21, 2009 Galvanic corrosion is caused by dissimilar metals, right? (just makeing sure I'm not brain farting...) With the wear pattern it has, it seems like something was up against it to cause it to corrode.
TT-(Moderator) 1,169 #4 Posted January 21, 2009 Galvanic corrosion is caused by dissimilar metals, right? That is correct. In this case, it appears to be caused more from the rusting of the steel blower housing that probably started at the rivet hole for the tag. The iron oxide came in contact with the tag, and when combined with moisture, it caused the tag to corrode. It's definitely not the first one I've seen like this. I have replaced quite a few VIN tags on semi-trailers over the years that were "eaten away" much worse. (road salt and chloride aren't nice to aluminum either!)
