Amcwheel85 2,059 #1 Posted March 12, 2017 (edited) Well guys after making the move to Tennessee, buying the house and working a lot I had no time to get on the internet for while. Now I'm getting so I have more time and have been looking to grow my wheel horse collection back up a little. They are way harder to find down here but I did find this 520-H when the guy contacted me about maybe buying his John Deere 317. The 520 needs restored but overall not worst I've seen and he mentioned scrapping it so for $100 he is bringing it to my house. Here are a few pics for now should have more this weekend. BTW I did pick up a nice cub cadet 108 with 48 inch deck to help mow my huge yard(don't hate to much!) Edited March 12, 2017 by Amcwheel85
Sparky-(Admin) 23,269 #2 Posted March 12, 2017 Can't go wrong for $100...and delivered to boot! You could easily triple your money just parting it out (if ya went that route) Mike.....
Amcwheel85 2,059 #3 Posted March 12, 2017 Kinda what I thought.. but would only do that if I was starving lol. Plan is to dig into the engine, maybe pull it and have it rebuilt(when I get the $$ cuz I know onans are expensive) but to me would be worth it if I can get it restored. Always wanted a 520 too. Wish it was 520-8 tho!
JAinVA 4,638 #4 Posted March 13, 2017 My first 520h came with an Onan that wouldn't run.I planned on getting in to it but put a Kohler 341 on to test the transaxle. Two years later the 16 horse is still on it.Just saying that there are ways to use the machine without going full boat into the Onan.$100 is a steal. You done real good!JAinVA
Ed Kennell 42,126 #5 Posted March 13, 2017 That mule drive with a good knob for a 100 bucks is a bargain, and he threw in a 520 with free shipping.
Amcwheel85 2,059 #6 Posted March 13, 2017 Lol thanks JA and ed! Can't wait to get it home and just get stage 1 of cleaning done on it! Don't have the 520 in the garage yet but these guys are waiting for it!

That mule drive is for the 60" deck. They are a lot harder to find. Did he possibly have the 60" deck hiding somewhere too ???? Good luck with it. Did he give you the missing engine covers ? I love the 520's. Cleat

Amcwheel85 2,059 #10 Posted March 13, 2017 He said he had most of the tin maybe all of it. And I think the deck is gone. Idk for sure if I wanna put a deck on it or if I just want to restore the tractor and maybe find rear hubcaps or just put chrome wheels on it to dress it up to cruise around on! Ed Kennell 42,126 #11 Posted March 13, 2017 I would test the hydro first. If the 1100 Eaton is good, It is worthy of a repower. May be a candidate for a new HF Predator?
Amcwheel85 2,059 #12 Posted March 13, 2017 Well I would like to keep the original Onan if I can but if not idk maybe look for another good Onan on another tractor. I like as original as possible on most tractors
Amcwheel85 2,059 #13 Posted March 13, 2017 (edited) Depending on what I decide to do with the 520 I may just sell the mule drive if I decide to just use it as a show cruiser/joy rider if i do sell the mule drive what would be a fair price to ask for it? littleredrider 409 #14 Posted March 13, 2017 If you do decide to part it, Id be interested in the steering reduction set up and the rear tires/rims. It's been a while (years) since I've been on the board, but just found out that there is a specific mule drive for the 60" deck, learn something new every day!!!!
Amcwheel85 2,059 #15 Posted March 18, 2017 (edited) Well stopped before work to help the guy load my new 520 and then he delivered it a few min ago. Gonna get it washed up tomorrow and I do have all the tin work. O and hour meter says 927 Edited March 18, 2017 by Amcwheel85
Amcwheel85 2,059 #16 Posted March 18, 2017 Here are some before cleaning pictures.
chip61 666 #17 Posted March 18, 2017 That looks a lot better than the 416-H I got from my neighbor. Lots of rust on mine and wiring harness has been butchered.
WVHillbilly520H 10,376 #18 Posted March 19, 2017 Hope that mold cleans up for you, what's amazing to me is the overall condition vs the relative good condition of the seat and and how clean those rear wheels are with out the covers, BTW I have a pr of rear chrome covers I doubt I ever use but not in the best of shape but probably could be brought back to life if your interested PM later, and the 1 I got last spring only had 236 hrs on it didn't look much better, and the wheel cover that came on it I had powder coated then I hand painted the embossing, Jeff.
Ed Kennell 42,126 #19 Posted March 19, 2017 You must have steadier hands and more patients than most Jeff. Nice save.
WVHillbilly520H 10,376 #20 Posted March 19, 2017 Thanks Ed, patience yes for the most part, steady hands not as much as in my youth used to put those plastic model kits together with ease, and 3 years art classes in high school, but 20+ years running industrial machinery has taken a toll on my wrist/hands, Jeff.
Amcwheel85 2,059 #21 Posted March 19, 2017 I got the mule drive off. What is a good fair price to sell it for?
WVHillbilly520H 10,376 #22 Posted March 19, 2017 Average price is $40 on eBay for a standard mule drive so that should give you a ball park for the rarer 60" version.
Amcwheel85 2,059 #23 Posted March 19, 2017 So maybe $80 shipped?

Amcwheel85 2,059 #25 Posted March 19, 2017 I would but the big show is a lot farther for me this year so I don't think I will make it. I'm gonna make it to the lawn and garden extravaganza in Evansville In in June tho
