kudzu3 323 #1 Posted February 5, 2017 Looking at a '68 (?) commando 6, but have a question. Researching this tractor, seems like it should be powered by a 6 hp Tecumseh. This one has a 6 hp Kohler, electric start. Is the kohler original, or should the Tecumseh be there. Doesn't really matter as far as the purchase, just wondering which is right. Thanks
rmaynard 15,936 #2 Posted February 5, 2017 Should be a Tecumseh HH60.
kudzu3 323 #3 Posted February 5, 2017 That's what I thought Bob. The owner says his grandfather bought it new in "about" '68, and the kohler "was on it". It supposedly was rebuilt about six years ago. Runs good, sounds good, looks good. I really prefer the kohler, but wondering about the honesty of the seller. Price is right, $200.00 OBO, with blade, mower deck, and "other equipment". Thanks for the info.
SPINJIM 1,984 #4 Posted February 5, 2017 My 1968 Commando 6 came without an engine. I picked up an old Tecy to put into it, but having trouble getting to run well, so I might put a Kohler or Honda GX in it. I like the tractor because it is a 'short frame', and has a smaller turning radius. Nice little 4-speed tractor. The price sounds good, especially with the accessories. And if it already has a running Kohler, so much the better. Good luck. Jim

He was looking at a 604 but wanted a Kohler. He was quoted a price on a swap but Dad decided he was just as well off going with a 704. A lot of things got swapped back then. Personally I would be happy it has a Kohler but I understand those who want 'factory original'. My 500 Special has a K-161 on it instead of the original Tecky H-60. DennisThornton 4,771 #6 Posted February 5, 2017 These custom dealer modifications add interest and confusion to collecting Wheel Horses! "l'm telling you I bought it brand new from the dealer with .xxxxx.!" Hey! He probably did!
