1971 Tiller off a C-160... Worth?

Recommended Posts

Duramax7man7

Might be able to get a tiller off a C-160. Seems to be in good shape from the photos. Don't see much rust at all except a tiny bit around bolts in photos.

Assuming it's a 1971 how much should I offer or it and will it mount up to either my 300 or 500 series tractors?

Thanks. Looking to make offer today.

Here's the only shot in the photo. It's all I have to go off of... :(

It would really be nice to see  shot of the tines. Also, I don't think that's a 1971. I think it's newer. The C-160 didn't come about until 1974. That has the newer style axle bracket which also indicates a newer model. Also, a 71 used a two belt drive setup with a pulley bracket attached to the frame just in front of the transmission. Yes, it will hook right up to your 300 or 500. You'll need the lift parts on your tractor. I hate to throw prices out there but if it were me buying it I would go $250-$300 if the tines were good and everything was there.:)

Awesome. The buyer is going to get me a Model number after work and send that over. Here is the thing..

They are offering their C-160 and Tiller for $400 obo. I asked if they'd sell just the Tiller and they asked what I was offering. That's when I asked for model number. I'll try and get a shot of the tines.

SO, I'm thinking that I can get this unit for a fairly good deal if that's all they want for the tractor and tiller. I don't want to offer to high though and make them think that they can get more out of me. Hope that doesn't sound Oak Tree-ish (i.e. shady). Just trying to play my cards right. I'm not going to steel it from him but as I do myself, I research things before selling to get an accurate price for them based on age, condition and availability.

At $400 for both that should be a smoking deal if the tractor is decent. See if he's got a deck, blade or any other attachments and don't hesitate. :auto-layrubber:

I'm not really interested in the tractor and don't have the money for it right now. Doesn't look that nice either... Rusty but they use it.

Tines...  Toro still has the Left and right main tines $445.76 each  ($891.52)

The outer tines are NLA.  There are some posts here somewhere about tines from other brands that may work

Aren't they made out of a different metal too? Something stronger? A Compound of sorts?

I do not know about Toro tines.  Troybilt tillers tines had two grades one was face hardened and cost almost 2x the regular ones.

Well I go to the belt guys and pay a fraction of the cost for Kevlar belts even.

Thanks for the info on the tines though!

Grrrrrr. The guy responded and said someone is coming to pickup everything... Smh... Not a very fair situation. So maybe it was for the better. Could have been a misleading sale. Oh well. I'm sure there will be others before spring time.

Wait what? What do you mean?

"That guy" referring to the sniper buyer! Comes in at the last second and BANG, she's gone? That guy?

Or "That guy" the one that doesn't stick to the deal?

For what it's worth I gave $300 for my tiller with all the extra parts 8 years ago, but the original belt wouldn't stay on while running it so I forked out the money for the Toro 1/2"x141" belt which TSC couldn't even order in, also those gearboxes are notorious for leaking while setting in storage so if you do end up with one remember to keep an eye on gear oil level before each use, also they don't do very well in compacted soils/sod the ground needs "turned" with a Brinly plow and maybe a disc too, once it's broken up the tiller does an excellent job there after, just my experiences, Jeff.

Ah gotcha. Thanks for chiming in. So the gear box is something of a concern if sitting over time. Copy That!

This is what I've been thinking. Getting a plow and then tilling everything in. First things first though. Gotta clear some sky. When about 5-6 maples that will be coming down. At least 3 this year which should get us started in the area that I'm thinking. But I will need to pull a wood fence and level out the ground as well.

How about the use of a ripper? Be good idea?

You are a strong individual. You held fast and only needed the tiller:bow-blue:. Could you please help some of the rest of us? If it were me? I would have offered him $350 for the unit. It seems he would have taken it, and thrown in the tractor:greetings-clappingyellow:. At least? That is what I would have told my wife:banana-rock:.

LOL- Funny stuff. Well now that is in my brain... THANKS! ha ha...

I >>>try<<< to have will power, prioritize and to be an astute person when it comes to choosing my purchases wisely. I will do my best though and try to help out. ;)

P.S. I Told the guy to tell me if it falls through. If it does, I may offer him a good price for the tractor and tiller. Always fun to have a tinker project. Although my 520h still has some tasks left on the list.

I contacted the po early yesterday and told him I wanted the complete package and had cash in hand. It is a great running driving unit, tiller works and has a brand new belt and the plow has a new wear edge. This tractor never had a deck by the looks of the attachamatic and other wear points.

The bonus was he had 753 with a 1962 /63 plow and deck, I took that too. Although the tractor and deck was dismantled for restore.

The po's grandpa is a collector to, I'll be back to that honey hole!

See what I mean?  As with refracman, I don't think I have ever left a hunting trip with just the machine I was" After in the first place". But hey? I am a collector of sorts. Mostly collecting things I don't really always need. At the time....... BTW refracman? Nice haul.  Mastiffman? Be patient. Another one will come along. Seems like out where you guys are? There are more available than here.
