D250 is it worth it ??

I like the big d250..........I like the way it looks anyway. and at 6'5" and 260 ++ it will fit me better than my RJ did. I know of one for sale, non running, more or less a complete unit, just been sitting a while. I know there are years that are ok and years that seam to have tranny problems......any quick way to tell if I am looking at the better version???  Thanks!!

If you want to work it , I'd stick to a D-180 or D-200 but those are limited in seat and leg room . I'm 6' and I had to raise the seat a bit but that helped a lot . I'd like to go up a bit higher and need to do that in the spring , plus it would help with visibility looking over that huge hood and nose . The 200 comes stock with turning brakes and a 3pt hitch which my D-180 doesn't have and would really like to own ...ugh .

The D is a monster , but those Gubrod made 250's had a whole list of issues and parts are about as rare as it gets ...

I have a 1979 D250 and I like it for its weight and horsepower. The only downside is the steering box on mine is bad but I'm going to convert to power steering anyway. I have moved a lot of dirt with a front blade and grader blade on it. I don't have any attachments for it because I have the 5xi for mowing and a loader for it. They can be hard to find parts for though.

Its probably not for someone who doesn't want to work on it because there will be problems. If I used my 5xi like I have the D250 I think the hydro would have failed on it. It's a different animal than most garden tractors and you have to be able to fabricate parts that can't be found.

I have a friend in Ct. has two of them. I went to look at them Man these things are over built. One tuff tractor. Every part is made for working duty. Made to last.Yes they can be on the pricey side But look at what you have One mean ditch digging earth moving  machine.

If my memory serves me, there was also a German version of the D-250, a Gutbrod 2500, I believe.  There used to be some info on the Gutbord version here somewhere.  I do think there are some manuals and brochures available on Garden Tractor Talk for download, but you have to be a member there to download any stuff from their site.

I've got 2 D-250's.One runs. One for parts.Huge garden tractor. They even tower over my D-200.If you like to tinker and have other working tractors to use while looking and waiting for D-250 parts,I'd buy it.At least go and see it in person. You'll be impressed.
