dlaw90 14 #1 Posted December 2, 2016 Hi, I am going to look at my first wheel horse tomorrow. It's a 1998(?) 314-8. It looks like there is a model 73448 A (SN #89000001 - 8900500) and a 73448 B (SN #8900500 - 8999999) for that year. Does anyone know what the difference is? I can't seem to find it. Thanks! SPINJIM 1,986 #2 Posted December 2, 2016 (edited) An educated guess would be, a difference between a Kohler Magnum 512 cc engine, and a Kohler Command 398 cc engine, both rated 14 hp. Some lit says the change was made at the end of 1997, but early 1998 might have still had some of the older inventory (serial number 8900001 thru 8900499). Serial number 8900500 and up should all be the Command engine. That's what I surmised after researching three sources, but someone with more experience might have a more definite answer for you. Either way, a good tractor. Good luck with it. Jim Edited December 2, 2016 by SPINJIM
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,611 #3 Posted December 2, 2016 Per my sources and what's in our Manuals section, is that all the 1998s had the CH14-1838 Kohler Commands in them. Rather if that is reality or not, I'm not sure. dlaw90 14 #4 Posted December 2, 2016 Thanks for the help. The pictures in the ad definitely show a Kohler Command 14 Pro Series engine, but it doesn't give the serial number for the tractor.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,512 #5 Posted December 3, 2016 The only difference I see is the setup instructions Parts manual and operator manual are the same for both. Garry

Garry Makes me wonder if the tractors came from Toro more fully assembled with revision B, so that the dealers didn't have to do so much. Toro might have been forced to ship more fully assembled, either by the competition or for liability reasons.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,512 #7 Posted December 3, 2016 All the 200 and 300-Series in 1998 have a mid model year serial number break. 200's 72045, 72046, 72064, 72085, 72102, 72104, 72110 300's 73428, 73448 The 5xi-Series do not have a break. Garry
