T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,611 #6 Posted November 20, 2016 1961 401. In 1960 Wheel Horse changed the front axles to the one shown, which carried over to the 1961 models. The hood is from 1961, so it makes it a 1961 unless the hood was replaced. Can't really see the hood support real well, but it looks like a non-electric starter one, so a 1961 401 from my meager knowledge.
953 nut 60,262 #7 Posted November 20, 2016 I would think it may be a 401 with a 704 hood. 701 hood had a solid front.
Racinbob 11,978 #8 Posted November 20, 2016 Definitely a 401 like T-mo said. Engine isn't original. The 551 had a different hood stand to accommodate a battery and a 2 piece case transmission. With no other identifying features it's possible that a 61 hood was put on a 60. The 400, 550 and 401 had the same hood stands. The electric start 550 had the battery under the seat. It was in front of the engine on the 551. Looks really nice.

I didn't noticed the grille on it. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees.
Jake Kuhn 1,579 #10 Posted November 20, 2016 Looks like a 61 401. And the hood is the factory replacement hood that would of been added later on.
wallfish 18,193 #11 Posted November 20, 2016 Jake nailed it. Certainly don't see too many of those early replacement hoods. Go get that one!
JERSEYHAWG / Glenn 4,499 #12 Posted November 20, 2016 (edited) Hot off the press. Oh, and thanks for all the information so far. Good learning for me. One day, I might be a red square pro. 500 bucks ? ? thoughts on that number ? Glenn Edited November 20, 2016 by JERSEYHAWG / Glenn
AMC RULES 37,202 #13 Posted November 20, 2016 Engine's been replaced... or a least the tins have been.
wallfish 18,193 #14 Posted November 20, 2016 Hmmm, Craig makes a good point. Tins look like replacements. That's a Clinton engine and not normally seen on a 401, BUT some 401s did come from the factory with Clinton B1290 engines so it is possible the engine itself is original. Curious where that serial tag is attached on that tractor? As far as price goes that's up to you. But I can tell you I bought a $100 RJ-58 and by the time all the missing parts were found, I got $600 into it. The belt guard is there, check for original gas tank, all the rims look good. It has a dozer blade foot pedal on there so maybe they still have the blade which would make the deal sweeter.

I figured it was a 704, but the fuel tank location wouldn't be right; never knew about factory hoods with the open grill; very Kool! . Can't believe it was for sale that long, frankly, I forgot about it. Well, it's gone now, sigh. Glenn
