Duramax7man7 506 #1 Posted November 18, 2016 So, my 520h has two things wrong and I will be replacing the old plastic style (?) governor ball spacer with a metal one (thanks Boomer!) soon as after about 30-45minutes of running the engine Rpm's increase on their own. So what I'm wonder is if this will cause surging at high Rpm's as well or will I be looking at the Sensitivity on the governor arm and spring settings? Thanks. Duramax7man7 506 #2 Posted December 17, 2016 Well after some thread searching I decided to try a couple of things out before going right to the Gov. Ball Spacer repair... I checked the governor arm linkages for proper positions and found that the arm linkage had a tiny bit of play in it. So after seeing the update memo that Toro/ WH put out about the Gov. Linkage Clips for the rod from the arm to the carb... it suggested to tighten those up. I pulled both of them and clinched them a bit with a pair of pliers and reinstalled them. That has fixed my surging issue at this point. This doesn't mean that I won't eventually need to replace the plastic Gov Ball Spacer. But for now this thing runs WOT with a fully loaded snow blower moving snow a good 20-30ft with no surging at all! So I'm pretty happy with it! Just figured that I'd give an update for anyone experiencing the same issue. Give the clips on the Governor Arm Linkage a good crimping and reinstall them to tighten up any play in the governor linkage a try if everything else seems fine. This may be your issue. GMan 82 #3 Posted December 18, 2016 Mastiffman, First thanks for sharing what you found regarding the high end surging. This must have become a "known" issue to the folks at Onan as some of the later models of the "P" series engines I have encountered over the years had a small light duty tension spring hooked along the length of the link between the governor pivot crank arm and the carburetor that you refer to. Then again other engines I have dealt with did not have this spring. Now admittedly most of my experience have been with JD's that used the Onan engines but I really don't think this was a JD thing. Maybe Boomer can shed some light on this. I do find your discovery very interesting and will keep it in mind as I deal with the other Onan related situations I have stashed in my barn......................Gary
Duramax7man7 506 #4 Posted December 18, 2016 (edited) Gary, I expressed my discovery of the over revving rpms slowly rasing after surging for a bit while working through the issues of this engine to him and he was the individual that informed of the plastic givernor ball spacer being an issue. I purchased the spacer from him figuring that I would replace the spacer in the next few weeks. But after making admustments to the governor system and only experiening the surging under engine loading I began to wonder if the spacer would cause this surging as a symptom along with the over revving. Hence the thread and my searching. I'm glad that I found the info and glad that you potentially found it useful as well. The pdf file that I found was on another site I believe. Cant fully remember the person that posted it. I will try and find the thread. The one thing I believe I did different that tue Onan memo was tighten up both clips on the linkage instead of the one recommended....
