What to look for; purchasing snowthrower

Recommended Posts

vette10r

Hey guys I have a Wheel Horse C-81 and I found a snow thrower attachment on craigslist for $150, it looks like it will work but I'm not sure so I am going to bring the tractor with to make sure it hooks up. What else should I be looking for? Just make sure everything spins freely? I am going to be putting this to use if we actually get some snow this year! Haha

Since you're going to hook it up, engage the PTO and spin it!

The lift bar and flag for lifting it are the parts you need to go with it.

They're naturally a bit loud and scary if you stand in front it to watch it spin!

36" is about all an 8 hp engine can handle anyway so that's OK. Wings are added to the sides for the 42" blowers.

That's an older style blower for the pre Tach A Matic tractors but looks like the mounting bars were changed to fit the Tach A Matic and is shifted over to the left so the pulleys line up. Those older ones used a bolt to the frame to attach them but that bar looks to be welded. The push pull lever is to engage it because the older tractors just had a pulley on the engine and not the PTO lever your tractor has. Looks like it will work.

I'm no expert on that so just throwing out an observation concerning it. No Lift flag or lift tube pictured so hopefully he has them but it's not the end of the world if he doesn't. You can make or find those parts. Hopefully someone with more experience with those will chime in.

Take a look at the pictures of mine in this thread.  You can see the lift tube and the flag.  :)

OK, having done this more than once, here are the things to look for:

Auger sprocket worn:  The teeth on the sprocket should not be pointy or narrow.  If they are that means the chain is stretched and the sprocket needs to be replaced-it is welded on.  Likely the drive sprocket will need to be replaced as well.  If you are not sure what a worn one looks like, want to see what a new sprocket looks likes, go to Tractor Supply.  They usually have a bunch in the store.

Chain rusty and binding:  Sure sign that the owners did not clean the salt off it at the end of last season

Bearings may be toast.  Run the thing for 15 minutes, shut everything down and then put your hand on the auger bearings and the drive shaft bearings.  They can be warm but not hot.  If you cannot keep your bare hand on them for more than 10 seconds they are hot, they will need to be replaced.

Auger bent:  while it is running, watch the auger rotate.  It should not wobble

Finally like others have said, lift tube, lift flag and helper spring (if you do not have a hydro lift) all need to be with it to make it operate.

Depending on how fastidious you are, your standards for your equipment, your capability to repair equipment, do machining and or welding, you could sink and additional $100-$200 into this blower.  Remember, thing never fail on a warm fall day-always in the middle of a raging blizzard.

Good luck

This is just my opinion, but by the looks of that particular one, keep looking.

I accidently bought one of these once. Its made for much older round hoods. It wont fit C/300/400/500 tractors. Pullys don't line up. Notice it has a pull-knob clutch lever because the older models did not have the side engine PTO.

keep looking.

Where about MN are you located?  I have a 36" blower that was on a commando 800.  I've never used it so I can't comment on the functionality of it but the price would be right,  known as make a donation to the site and you can have it.

@vette10r, if you're remotely interested, let me know otherwise I'm going to scrap it.  I don't have a use for it and it need to be gone before the snow flies.

Pretty sure you're going to be disappointed... I'm 99% sure that won't fit up to a C-81.... it's an older style blower made for use with a mid-60s model. Unless it's been modified, the engagement lever and directional control will hit either the muffler or PTO bail on your C-81. You need to find one that looks like this....
