Trying to get a spark on a Kohler k91 4hp Small Engine

Hello :)

 

I am new here and also from the UK and I am looking for some advice please. I am trying to get a old Kohler k91 4hp engine to get a spark. I have bought a electronic ignition kit which is like the 'nova 2' kits you can get in America. I would like to know how do I attach the positive to the coil? Is it one of the small wires that attaches to the condenser behind the flywheel or is it the wire that attaches to the points on the outside? I have attached mine to the wire that goes to the points but I am still not getting a spark. Also there are 2 loose wires behind the flywheel that connected to the condenser that was removed.

 

Also if we replaced the coil can anyone suggest a compatible coil or even a upgrade to a modern compatible coil for the kohler k91 4hp? The genuine or OEM coils cost way to much and we are on a tight budget.

Yes that is the type of kit I am using.

 

I would like to point out I have seen that video before. That video was the inspiration for buying the kit in the first place.

I'm glad you started this thread hamster. I've been having intermittent spark issues with the K-91 on my Suburban. I'll get it running perfectly then it just loses spark again. I've never heard of those Nova 2 modules. I now have two of them on their way.

 

You can find aftermarket coils for about $20. They are 'almost' a direct fit. There's a simple modification needed to make them physically fit. There's a thread on here on what needs to be done.:)

Sure. I want to research them better first. I did a little already and it seems like the reliability may not be there. One question I haven't found the answer to is the kill switch. I don't see any reason it would be any different than with the points/condenser but I just want to verify. It will be fun playing with them in any case. At $23.99 for two of them delivered they are cheap enough.:)

Its not quite a tractor but a Howard 300/350 Rotavator/Rototiller

 

It has a Kohler K91 4hp engine on it that has no spark and I have never worked on the kohler engines. I am more used to the horizontal Briggs 3hp/5hp engines with the nightmare pulsa-jet carbs. If I cannot get the spark working on the kohler then I am going to swap it out for a 6.5 hp Honda clone as the kohler parts are rather expensive and I am on a very tight budget. I would save the kohler engine for a later project though.

Thank you I would appreciated that :) Also I think others with the K91 would appreciate a tutorial on the upgrade to electronic ignition as it could save many old Kohler engines. I find points a pain in the neck (to put it politely)
