whfan74 2,071 #1 Posted January 5, 2009 I was curious if anyone has heard of an Air Horse? They were used to move planes around. We are trying to track one down.....but so far no luck. They had two at the local airport and we have someone trying to find out if there is still one around. Just curious if anybody knows much about them.

Teddy da Bear 11 #4 Posted January 6, 2009 Those tractors look weird cantalevered out over "nothing" where the front wheels should be. :hide:

TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #10 Posted January 6, 2009 The hitch assembly only allows left-to-right pivoting, just like the motor scrapers or "pans" used in excavating: .... and once the front of an airplane is on the dolly, you'd never have to worry. :hide:
BPjunk 184 #11 Posted January 6, 2009 Hey Mike Hired Guns, I thought that picture looked familar. That picture was sent to me from a guy in Maryland (eastern shore area) who was restoring this Air Horse. I begged him to bring it to the Wheel Horse Show! It will pull a 30,000 pound Air King Lear Jet and is all hydraulic. (there is NO MISTAKE in the numbers of zeros I wrote in that sentance) Air Horses were made for years up to the Maroon striped 500 series Wheel Horses. The Air Horse is quite exspencive $$$$. whfan74 2,071 #12 Posted January 6, 2009 Thanks for all of the info guys. We are hoping to be able to get our hands on one. There is just something neat about those things. Not too many of them around.....but we feel it would be a good conversation piece. If we do get our hands on one I would be more than happy to bring it to the show. Teddy da Bear 11 #15 Posted January 6, 2009 Very k-ewl.....has it's own decals. Looks like a special steering mechanism (black cylinder thingy on the steering column). Looks like the exhaust is coming out the wrong side for a typical kohler configuration... Engine looks like a Tecumseh. Knowing the poor lighting of this type of lamps/lenses.....I am surprized they did not give it a floodlight configuration for night time use. And can be driven from the seat on the hood?? I hope they reinforced that hood as it did not take too much weight to bend em. :hide:
wh500special 2,267 #16 Posted January 6, 2009 I've always wondered about how the frame to transaxle mounting plate fared on these things . Granted they probably were mostly operated on smooth surfaces but all that weight of the engine cantilevered way out on the front has got to be tough on that plate. Of course the load in the plate area would be in compression so it might not be as bad as I think it could be and might actually be less than for the 60" mid deck offered on the 520's. That plate junction was probably the weakest point on those C-style tractors. Just thinking out loud. Steve
Michael Bullington 5 #17 Posted January 6, 2009 my question is how did this thing turn??? also think of the weight if a large man sat on that cushion on the hood..WOW I have to say its quite the piece....great additional to anyones collection
wh500special 2,267 #18 Posted January 6, 2009 my question is how did this thing turn??? There is/are hydraulic cylinder(s) mounted next to the pivoting hitch b/t the tractor and the dolly. It pivots side to side much like a power angle snowplow...
