Onan Starter question

Is there a way to shim or adjust the starter  on a P220. It sounds like hell when engaged and the motor kicks back when it fires like the timing is advanced. I have already broken one nose already and chewed up one ring gear. Its the right starter and I see no way to adjust in or out to make it mesh better.

My Onan's never kick back even with a weak battery.

Your timing may indeed be off. The only way I can see is if the plastic magnet on the crank that triggers the ignition module has turned.

I have had the flywheel off to replace the ring gear and everything is fine there. The key is a step type key. Lower step locks in the rotor and the tall step the flywheel.  What really brought me to ask this question is a friend brought me a P218 in boxes to put back together and this thing does the same thing.

I just worked on my uncle's p218 and had to add a washer between the starter and block it helped alot. The original flywheel ended up being trashed bought another and had starter rebuilt

So you moved the starter in towards the flywheel? And did you add the washer to both bolts or just one?

I only added the washer to the top hole and yes I believe it did move it in.

On this particular engine something wasn't right. The mounting hole through the block for the starter was cracked so that's the one I added the washer too. It made a big difference in my experience. May not in someone else's situation.

This one, the P218, and my P220 has the holes straight across the top. By looking at the drive the starter needs to move away from the ring gear

I've noticed the same exact thing on my P220G-I/10955C on the 90' 520-H that I newly acquired and the 9 tooth pinion doesn't seem to match the 95 tooth 170-4039 Flywheel ring gear. The ring gear was all chewed up from the time I got it and it sounded horrible.

I purchased another flywheel and I'm debating on what to do about the Starter... Boomer informed that the B series Onan 20hp motors didn't have the ring problems.

Looking for a solution as well.

I just pulled the starter from my 41-20OE01 toro 520H.  It had a 191-1949-04 Starter on it. I'm guessing this starter was a replacement as the parts diagrams all show 112-7023 for the starter.

I too found a hairline crack on the bolt hole that is up against the cylinder. It's at the end which is closest to the flywheel. The crack is on the bottom of the hole closest to the starter. It's only about 5/8" to 3/4" long and when I put a bolt in that end of the hole and cranked on it, I couldn't see any movement at all. I purchased a new (use) flywheel and will be receiving a new (used) pinion gear from Boomer by the weekend. So hopefully the crack was from misalignment over the years from an old chewed up flywheel and will do great with a newer flywheel and pinion gear.

If not, I will be replacing the starter and oil pan with a B43E, B48E or a B48G series Onan 20hp engine as I'm being informed that they didn't have the issues that the P series combo had...
