Motor swap, ignition issues

Recommended Posts

Red Devil

Ok I am swapping a motor out of my 312-8 (motor ran fine tractor in rough shape) into a 310-8 (blown motor has sat for 5 years) and have the motor swapped and hooked up gas line is good brand new battery, starter is good, problem is when I turn the key now nothing happens but if I cross solenoid it rolls right over am I right to think it's either key switch or solenoid?

I would say its the solenoid or a safety switch

Ok because mechanically everything swaps from the 312 I'll pull the one off it and switch them out and check the safety switches, can't remember where all switches are so I'll do some hunting tonight hopefully

To easily eliminate the solenoid as the issue, jump the large terminal connected to the + battery to the small post. The solenoid should activate.

You can probably find a 310 wire diagram in the files section to help trace wires and ID the safety switches. Clutch, PTO, seat.

You may have a wiring problem also as the 312 and the 310 have different charging systems. You can find the wiring diagrams for each in Wheel Horse Manuals section on this forum.

Be careful here.  Over the years these models came with battery Ignition and some with magneto.  You can fry expensive pieces if miss wired or using wrong igniton switch.  Also as Don1977 points out there are different charging systems which would require different wiring.

What are the spec numbers of the two motors???

All the parts seem interchangeable and all the connectors matched up wire color wise down to the fly wheel including magneto in top, carb, every nut screw and wire  you name it honestly only difference I can find between the two is the two gauges on the lower dash at work now but I'll definetly pop the side panels of maybe I'll end up swapping the whole wiring dash set up?
