engine froze up then freed up

i shut off engine and when i went to start is would not turn over, put wrench on shaft and it broke loose, it then started an ran fine, thinking the starter was at fault, possibly the bendix hung up on the fly wheel , has anyone had this kind of trouble? what will i see when i pull the starter? wear on bendix wear on flywheel.

Does sound like the starter binding up. Might be loose starter bolts or worn gears. Might be better to pull the engine shroud off and get a good look at it while trying to start it if you don't see something obvious. Easier said than done for the bigger engine tractors but fairly simple for the single cylinders.

Happened to me on my C-105 once.  I thought it had seized, I was so upset, then after some observation and tinkering, I noticed the starter was half engaged.  tapped it with a hammer, and it went back into its normal spot.  never had the issue again.

          Your first step in correcting this problem could be a bit of lubrication and cleaning of the Bendix so it will move freely.

Lots of good info, looks like lubercation of bendix is in order, I love this machine, how do and I get and what will a repair manual cost. Also on a different subject approximately how much would it cost to overhaul a c141 cast iron 14 hp engine just an approximate. appreciate the information. its a kohler model k321as.

Be careful what you lube that starter with. Grease or oil will cause enough friction so the gear won't move by the motor spin. Plus they will hold dust and dirt and it will get worse over time so best to use a dry lube like graphite. A good cleaning may be good enough.
