GMan 82 #1 Posted September 15, 2016 Hey Guys, I just bought another 520H tractor. It is one of the Toro/Wheel Horse models although I'm not sure of the year. It carries serial number 5901830. Anyway, as I unloaded it off the trailer I noticed it moved extremely slow in reverse. Forward it moves much as it should (I think). Does anyone know if there is an adjustment procedure that would better balance travel between forward and reverse, or am I facing worn linkage parts? I am not familiar at all with the Wheel Horse brand as they are new to me. But I am anxious to learn................Thanks in advance! Gary H.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,315 #2 Posted September 15, 2016 Service manual I recall someone saying that problem was corrected by removing the seat and rear fender pan. This gave good access to clean years of dirt and grass clippings from the shift linkage. Garry
Wishin4a416 2,191 #3 Posted September 15, 2016 (edited) Your tractor should be a 95. I dont know the Hydro adjustment YET. Edited September 15, 2016 by Wishin4a416
dclarke 4,077 #4 Posted September 16, 2016 You might have to push down on the hydro lever before you pull it into reverse.
WNYPCRepair 1,923 #5 Posted September 16, 2016 And also make sure the brake pedal is returning all the way back up when you release it. A weak brake return spring will either not let you put it in reverse, or make it go slower in reverse, depending on how loose. Pull up on the brake pedal with your foot and see if it makes a difference
cleat 7,132 #6 Posted September 16, 2016 One of mine goes slower in reverse than the others. I will try and figure it out some day. Mine is very clean so no grass clippings etc in the way. I think it just needs some adjustment. Neutral is perfect so maybe the link rod needs to be adjusted. I have Matt's foot control on this tractor as well. Denny, I'm embarassed to say that you hit the nail right on the head! I pushed down on the lever and the tractor responded exactly as it should. Funny how that works! The handle even has "push down for reverse" embossed right into it. Like I said earlier in this thread Wheel Horse is quite new to me. I've played with JD's for 40 years, so this is really going to be a lot of fun (and obviously at times embarassing) learning a new brand. I really like this 520 though. I just have to get the kinks worked out of it. This is the 3rd 520 I've managed to pick up here lately....................Anyway thanks for your help and I think I will resign myself to do some reading up on these Horses before I hollar "Wolf" the next time! ........................Gary

I bought my first 520 a few weeks ago and it wouldn't back up very fast either until I figured out I had to push down on the lever then pull it back. Glad you got it figured out.
