Front end bolt on Suburban

Recommended Posts

Skeeters65

Hey guys I got my Suburban all apart but I can't get the one center bolt out of the front end.

I got the nut off but the bolt will not move. I have it soaking in WD-40 now.

My questions are:

-Does that bolt thread out, get pressed out, or should it just fall out?

-Seems as though the frond end should pivot but it doesn't. Is it supposed to?

Thanks

My guess is it is rusted tight. This is why it doesn't pivot OR the bolt come out easy!

Sounds like its rusted fast. Screw the nut back on a few threads and try tapping it with a hammer. That might make it come off.        Wayne

If you can't heat it with a torch, smack it a couple of good ones with a BRASS hammer,,,I think PB Blaster is better stuff......good luck..

Well that didn't work so well.

Heat and all and it wouldn't budge. I did get the front end to move though.

The bolt end is now peened over and it is still stuck tight. Going to have to cut the threaded end off the bolt and try something else.

Any ideas?

Thinking of welding a long piece of steel onto the bolt head and have a go at turning it.

Thanks

The idea behind the brass hammer is to keep from damaging the bolt...If it won't budge, welding anything to the bolt head will probably not work..can you grind off the peened area?? I would, before I went any farther  . Did you get it cherry red?...are you using an acetylene torch? If so, use a # 1 tip and a narrow flame and heat just the bolt....let it cool and do it again... this will loosen the grip of  the rust...The only downside to this is the bolt will really be hard and won't drill too well if you decide to drill it out .. wish I could help you  - I have restored several old cars and trucks - rusted bolts everywhere....:(
