cdr_warsstar 106 #1 Posted September 10, 2016 First off, I'm going to try and get more pictures this evening. I forgot my boots today and really didn't want to track mud everywhere. And the day I was actually back there, I was more concerned with retrieving a Poulon with what appears to be a good engine to get pictures. Here's what I do know. It had decals that read "12 Automatic", and I believe blue stripes with white stars down the sides of the hood. It had a Kohler 12 engine. It had a snow plow on it, with some homemade reinforcing to the bottom edge. The engine appeared to be complete except for the muffler, which I'm betting isn't OEM since it was on the end of a thread steel pipe. The rear fenders and seat area have been smashed up some, but it looks like the metal can be straightened out. It appears to have a deck to go with it since there was one leaning up in the corner of the shed. So my question is, based off that info and hopefully more pictures tonight, should I try and get it? I'd probably have to get it tomorrow, as the property is going to be leveled in the next few days.
Jerry77 1,218 #2 Posted September 10, 2016 I would think if you can get it cheap enough, if it isn't worth saving you could make some money parting it out and saving parts from destruction for wheel horse folks...snow plows and the brackets to attach them are in demand, as well as mower decks and engines...just sayin.... --someone will post better info, especially since you mentioned the stars and stripes on the hood...
Ed Kennell 42,093 #3 Posted September 10, 2016 Yeah, It is worth more than the $30 the scrap yard will pay.
953 nut 60,204 #4 Posted September 10, 2016 Sounds like you have found a 1973 12 HP Hydromatic. They are a fine and well worth saving.
cdr_warsstar 106 #5 Posted September 11, 2016 The only cost is going to be the effort required to get it out and on a trailer. Here's some more pictures. It definitely needs a hug.
Bert 760 #6 Posted September 11, 2016 Sure looks worth saving in my opinion
Ed Kennell 42,093 #7 Posted September 11, 2016 (edited) Some good stuff there...axle bracket, electric PTO clutch, and that little green creature by the deck. Did the operator survive the crash? Edited September 11, 2016 by Ed Kennell
953 nut 60,204 #8 Posted September 11, 2016 I noticed the tow valve is in the tow position; that is a good thing, leave it that way until you get it running and want to drive it. looks like they pushed it over there using the seat as a bumper.
Ed Kennell 42,093 #9 Posted September 11, 2016 Right Richard, but what if he wants to drive it home??
ACman 7,655 #10 Posted September 11, 2016 Check out that property good . On your 8'th picture , to the right of the green chair , it looks like some sort of rear mounted equipment.
Dan Hankins 80 #11 Posted September 11, 2016 All you have to do is drag it out and it's yours. I looked and your in Indiana if you don't want it I'll drive an hour and a half north for it.

Ed, I am optimistic too, but that sea looks to uncomfortable to me. 9 hours ago, 953 nut said: leave it that way until you get it running and want to drive it. Besides, I mentioned that it needed to be moved to drive it!

Sarge 3,465 #14 Posted September 11, 2016 I wouldn't be afraid of it - good heavy metal bar and a hammer will fix that tool box pretty quick as well as the seat mounts/rails . Just don't do any more damage getting it out , lol.... Sarge

cdr_warsstar 106 #16 Posted September 11, 2016 Thanks guys. I'm about to head out to get it. And yeah, that seat looks a bit uncomfortable. I'll post an update when I get it home.
cdr_warsstar 106 #17 Posted September 11, 2016 (edited) Got it. Got lucky and found the mule drive in the corner, and the deck belt cover in the rafters. And I found a key that fits the Wheel Horse on that old Excel Hustler. If it wasn't so trashed, I'd be tempted. Engine on the Wheel Horse isn't locked up, and the oil still looks new. Part of me wants to grab the drivetrain. Those hydrostatic pumps could be useful down the road..... If they haven't leveled the place by tomorrow night, I may see what it would take to get it.

bslms 19 #24 Posted September 12, 2016 Excel is a manufacturer of commercial mowers, I believe they also make the Big Dog branded mowers also. They are walk behinds and zero turns. Hustler has what many in the industry consider to be the smoothest hydros on the market. Never tried one, no dealers around here. I have eXmarks and Toros.
WHX?? 51,838 #25 Posted September 12, 2016 Haha real funny Jason ...I tried that and all I got was what looked like a goofy three wheeled backwards forklift with a cab at a government auction....go figure... His pic looks like a boat with wheels so here I'm thinkin some kind of amphibian morphodite tractor of sorts.... You can't tell me at first glance that don't look like a boat!! Motor up front with the prop shaft between yer legs out the rear....
