JERSEYHAWG / Glenn 4,499 #1 Posted September 7, 2016 (edited) A close friend of mine just calls me. He is on his motorcycle riding home, about 2 miles from where I live. There's a wheel horse for sale in the driveway. He gets me the number and talk to the owner for a bit.I just got off the phone with the owner, he isn't sure of the year, BUT, he bought it brand new. He says the first year for wheel horse toro. He says the motor starts with a O. I say Onan, he goes that's it. My friend Pete tells me he spots 520 on it. . The old timer says it has much less than 500 hours on it. He also says the big 60 inch deck, wheel weights, chains and a single stage snowthrower to. Here's the clincher, I ask how the transmission is, the hydro, any Problems? He says it's not a hydro, it's a hi / lo shift. Bottom line he is asking a thousand bucks. Tomorrow I will go look, take pictures and report back. My friend Pete says it's a little paint off here and there but not bad. Ok, we don't know how she looks, we don't know exact year or hours. But considering so far what I said. Do we agree that a thousand dollars is a fair asking Price? I think it might be, and I can't believe it's the rare 520-8, shift model......... Give me your thoughts, thanks men. I am all excited,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,oh, another thing, don't tell my mrs. Shhhhhhhh,,,,mums the word. slammer302 2,156 #2 Posted September 7, 2016 Sounds like a 520-8. It would have to be in good working condition for me to consider spending $1000 but i'm kinda a cheap skate. But it is worth looking at you never know what price you may get him down sum if you decide you can't live with out it. Good luck!
Wishin4a416 2,191 #3 Posted September 8, 2016 Oh boy Glenn. Decisions, Decisions. You know the 60 inch decks bring good money if in good condition. I dont know what year the tall chute snowblowers started if he bought it with the tractor and it sounds like a 90 correct? First year for the 520 badged Wheelhorse/Toro. 88 and 89 were still labeled only wheelhorse I think. If a 90 it would have the swept axle but not gear reduction steering. Your gonna have to take a look. Might be a clean one or not.
rmaynard 16,327 #4 Posted September 8, 2016 (edited) Let's assume that everything is in very good condition with minimal rust. Chances are it has plastic covered concrete wheel weights, value $65.00, chains $35.00, single stage snow thrower, $150.00, and 60" deck $500.00. That totals $750.00 leaving $250.00 for a low hours, fairly rare 520-8 speed. I'd say that's not a bad deal. If you check eBay you will see a 60" deck that recently sold for $750.00. Just my 2 cent worth. Edited September 8, 2016 by rmaynard
jdleach 525 #5 Posted September 8, 2016 Agree with Bob. While I will probably never buy anything with "Toro" on it (got a thing about Wheel Horse and Toro in the same sentence), it sounds like this tractor is in serious need of investigation.
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #6 Posted September 8, 2016 It's a one owner low hour 520-8speed Glenn, and you know Wheel Horses about as good as anyone here. Need I say more? Post some pics after you pick it up tomorrow.

wh500special 2,277 #8 Posted September 8, 2016 Nobody on this board is going to SELL a 520-8 with that equipment for $1000. 200-ish of them were made. "Bucket List" tractor for a lot of guys. Buy it. Don't plan on lifting that 60" deck off the ground with the manual lift though. Heavy suckers. Steve

I hope today I can, but it's not mint, that was my first 520, that was clean. This one was worked by the owner, lawn cutting and snowthrower for the driveway. Me and the owner have been having trouble with our timing. They are moving on Sept. 30th. So they have been very busy on their end. But I think today will be the day. BTW: let's not forget today, Sept. 11th. A tragic day for our country. Pray for the lost souls. Glenn
