Was wondering if one of you fellows could do me a favor. I picked up a 520 and want to change the Tranny oil but am suspect of the dipstick. It is black on top instead of red. Just wanted to get the correct measurement of one so I do not overfill. 1410 on the NAPA filter correct.

That trans/differential takes 5 qts of oil check after adding that if it shows full you are all set. The color could mean that it's a replacement

Thanks. I know how much oil it takes but I want to make sure I have the right stick.

My Eaton 1100 was drained, then I added enough oil to read "full" on the dipstick. After running it for several hours, I checked the stick. It was low, so I added a bit more to top it off. Then I put it in the shed for a couple of weeks. When i checked it again, there was oil all over the floor. Couldn't find any leaks but there was oil all around the hitch and the bottom of the tranny. I checked the dipstick and it said full.  Cleaned my mess up and there has not been any oil leak since.

 

So where am I going with this? I think that when the dipstick said full, it was actually over filled, and the excess found it's way out while it was sitting.

I have seen these eatons "burp" oil out. Happened to me a couple of times. What I do now when filling I remove a hitch tube bolt and fill until it shows about a pint low. Drive it some and put it away for a couple of days. Then remove the bolt again and check the level. If it's where I left it, I add about 1/2 pt and drive it again. If it's lower I bring it back to a pt. low. Let it sit another couple of days and slowly top it off.it won't hurt anything running it a tick low.
