Wheel Horse Models

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever tried to decode year models 1968-1970...It appears that there is some random meaning to these model numbers.

example: before the dash

the 1= Wheel horse division

the 2= Reo Division

After the Dash in the model number

first number = type (example #3= Special or workhorse #4 = 4 speed; 6 = #8 Speed; #7 = Sundstrand #8 = Peerless)

second number=0 =10 Hp

third number= year ( example 3 = 1968; 4=1969; 5=1970)

fourth number= Version (Example = 1= v70 engine; & 2=v80 engine)

maybe someone has already figured this out :hide: !

From what I have seen, the first digit before the hyphen denotes the "group".

This is a rough breakdown, and in no way guaranteed correct.

1 = tractors

2 = Reo products

3 = RER's & push mowers

4 = Walk behind snowblowers

5 = rotary mower decks

6 = snowthrowers and dozer blades

7 = Specialty attachments - tillers/sickle bars/discs/cultivators/trailers and carts, etc.

8 = tractor accessories - PTO's, hitches, etc.

The last 4 digits after the hyphen are so random that they can't possibly have a standardized meaning.

Run through THIS LIST at PartsTree and you'll see what I mean.

okay here is an example of the Sunstrand models 1968-1970 years

first digit...see the 7 in every model = sunstrand

next digit is the hp ...matches each model

next digit is the year 3=68; 4=69; 5=70 matches each model

next is the verison...that can mean any type of change or addition, the electo jumped to a 5 to allow changes to the charger.

Im guessing at all this, but it looks pretty good!

okay here is an example of the 8- Speed models 1968-1970 years

first digit...see the 6 in every model = 8- Speed

next digit is the hp ...matches each model

next digit is the year 3=68; 4=69; 5=70 matches each model

next is the verison...that can mean any type of change or addition

although the 6041 misses the year somehow? or maybe that raider 10 was really a 69?

That does seem to line up with your theory. I never really looked at it that close. :D

1-6041 is a 1969 Raider 10 - the MPV and related sites are wrong. (hard to believe, huh? :hide: ) I have owned two of them and also have the real PL & I manuals.
