moe1965 766 #1 Posted September 2, 2016 (edited) I bought a sb 421 with a 11 hp briggs. The guy I bought it from rebuilt it but never completed it 100 percent so I guess you could say I bought a basket case. I reassembled the rest of the external parts of the engine. I ran it for 6 hrs and it quit. Here is what I found. One if the retainer clips came off. It was on the exhaust side. I couldn't get the retainer back in place. I took the valve and retainer to a mower shop and they said it was the wrong retainer for that valve. Long story short the retainers were on the wrong valves. The exhaust side retainer doesnt even fit on all the way as it should not being a matched set. That is valve and retainer. It must of held on with the spring presser half cocked until it gave up last night. The first picture is the proper way and the second is the wrong way going from top to bottom. BESTDOGEVER 218 #3 Posted September 3, 2016 I had a 24 horse briggs in a 2004 cub cadet that 3 years later blew a head gasket on the left side but wouldn't run on the other cylinder. When we pulled the other head we found it had no push rods on that side and thats from the factory. Try getting anywhere with getting that fixed by the factory or dealer

BESTDOGEVER 218 #5 Posted October 31, 2016 On mine I knew it was missing them from day one because there was no wear on the lifters they still had the factory coating on them but for all the hassle I got from the dealer it was easier to buy 2 pushrods and a head gasket than to waste days trying to reason with blockheads.
