classicdmax 190 #1 Posted August 21, 2016 hi all. i just purchased my first wheel horse. model 1-0440 16hp auto...1973 i believe. seems to run well but needs tlc. after i got it home and had a closer look, i realized the wiring is worse than i thought, it had been butched to death over the years. all the sheetmetal is in good shape and has the aged patina'd looki wanted although it looks it may have been painted at some point in the past. for now i plan to leave it as it sits and just go through the mechanicals the be sure its mechanically sound. i just pulled the hydro hoses as they were leaking and plan to have a new set made up locally. as i said i am new to all this, any pointers anyone could pass along and parts resources would be a great help. ive superficially scratched the internet for parts but having little luck thanks j- 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

There are several good parts suppliers out there depending on what you need. Don't hesitate to ask questions. I have one like it, as well as model 1-0465 (1973 12hp Auto). 1973 is the 'No Name' year and were subsequently designated as C-160, C-120, etc. 1973 is also the year that the motion control lever is between your knees...instead of on the right hand side using a tall control lever at about steering wheel height. KC9KAS 4,744 #14 Posted August 21, 2016 @classicdmax and I picked up a C-160 and the wiring was mess. I got the wiring diagram from our files and proceeded to take ALL the wiring out and replaced it. I used size and color correct wires and bought new "PACKARD 56" style connectors as well as new male/female pins for the connectors. I also bought the crimping tool for the pins. The 1st wiring job was costly due to the price of the crimpers, but they have paid for themselves time and time again! 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

classicdmax 190 #17 Posted August 22, 2016 i thought i might be sitting on a c-160 from some research ive done......and the subsequent lack of 'designation" my machine had. from the photo you see, the left front wheel is not correct, nor did i realize this until i got the tractor home and started tinkering, i just thought it had a different paint job. although right front seems to be correct. im gonna have the hoses made up tomorrow and get all fluids to their proper levels. then will start on wiring....of which im fairly handy with 12v systems, but will prob need lots of guidance on this. i plan to try to keep things "proper" as best i can, but will try not to waste too much time being anal. also the muffler doesnt seem to be correct (no pic of right side). id like to fab up tasteful stainless stack if i can somehow break the existing unit free from the head. i appreciate the open arms and will certainly be tapping the resources of your members thanks 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
