Ed Kennell 42,081 #1 Posted August 16, 2016 After mowing with the 312H tonight I left the motor running and started to hose off the grass when I heard this high pitched bearing squealing noise. I turned off the hose and walked around the tractor but could not pinpoint the source of the noise. So I turned off the engine and the squealing noise continued. Found it.....a swarm of cicadas in the locust tree I parked under.
doc724 925 #2 Posted August 16, 2016 Several years ago I bicycled thru Missouri in May. We had to listen these things for miles on end and for at least 3 days. At first they sounded like a string trimmer. The intensity increased from there and it became like a circular saw. When we crossed the Mississippi into Illinois it stopped and there were dead bugs crunching under our tires. Didn't miss those suckers at all
stevasaurus 23,285 #3 Posted August 16, 2016 So...maybe a bad bearing in a 312H sounds like a bunch of cicadas??? Ed, we need a video with a sound track so we can help other members.

Those things drive us crazy in Iowa as well.
Ed Kennell 42,081 #5 Posted August 16, 2016 Here ya go Steve. There is a seven year and a seventeen year locust Doug. And when their life cycles fall on the same year the numbers are enormous.
