kohler 8HP on 857 problem

Recommended Posts

I have specific symptoms....need help. after the engine warmed up for 10 mins or so, after a few stop/starts, I throttled up and it cut out. quickly dropping back to idle, it would run slowly fwd in any gear. if I throttled up it would cut out.

Diagnosis please?  btw have used seafoam in the fuel for a few tanks of gas......  thanks

Your fuel tank could be airlocked. Try cracking the cap. That happened  to a B-100 I have.

Due to the use of the Seafoam, you probably "cleaned" out the fuel tank, fuel line and other crap in the carb and it is clogging the main jet.

Seafoam works really good, but unless all the crap gets sucked into the combustion chamber and burnt up, you sometimes have to clean up the carb!

Have you changed out the air filter, points, condenser and spark plug? Any of these can have a drastic effect on an engine's performance.

You may try to choke the engine when it's not running right if it helps it run better then you will know that the engine is starving for fuel. Ie carb or fuel delivery problem

Just had this problem with my 1076. After trying numerous things with the fuel system it ended up being the condenser. Changed that & life was good again.

UPDATE: the Koehler starts right up once it cools and will run on full throttle. Does this help eliminate any of the possible causes you have put forth?

Coils and condensers can be temperature sensitive. when you shut down the engine while it is hot remove the condenser wire that connects to the "-" terminal of the coil and see if it will start; if it starts the condenser was probably the problem. An engine will run without a condenser but it is not good for the points. Don't continue to run it without a condenser.

What did you change to achieve this improvement?

my apologies.  to add that its not only starting up after being cold, but it will run at full throttle. that was my original issue. once it  runs and warms up,it occasionally will cut out as I throttle up. if I quickly throttle down, it runs...... sorry for lack of clarity. perhaps I should run for public office.....lol

Let me clarify my ambiguous statement which was intended to mislead you! I am running for public office because my checkered past would prevent me from getting a real job.  :ychain:
