New guy here with old B-80

Recommended Posts

IMwalt

Just found this forum, and great timing. I'm in the process of working on a B-80 that has been sitting in my mom's garage since my dad passed away 14 years ago. My dad repaired tractors for extra money and this one started up right away after I replaced the fuel tank gasket.

Now I'm trying to make it go faster so I can use it to win my yearly neighborhood lawn mower race, which is taking place on Labor Day weekend.

I removed the rear drive pulley, stamped with 100425 and 7492, and now I'd like to find a smaller one. I know this is 3/4" ID, with a key and set screw. Does anyone know where I can find a listing of pulleys that will work? It is a 6" and I'm thinking of going to a 4 or somewhere around that.

Hey Digger,

I'm near Syracuse. The race is good clean fun. Suggestion to start was actually made by one of my buddy's wife. WE done it 4 or 5 years now. Guys mount deer antlers and such on their tractors. One year I welded up a bracket to hold a nitrous tank on the front of my John Deere. I ran the tube up near the carb. It wasn't hooked up but sure had the guys scared for a while. This year I'm going to win for sure.

I'm going to try rounding up some wheelie bars I can weld on for show, run a straight pipe to make it loud. I hope to get around to put a brake-lever throttle on the steering wheel. Had plans to put a hood scoop on it but not sure if I'll have enough time before Labor Day.

WHX??

My stepson was into lawn mower racing and he always wanted to modify mine (sometimes permantly) to race them....I said ney ney to that.  These guys were hardcore and would make them really fly. Horses were too top heavy and easy to roll so most guys stayed away from them. Foot pedal throttles were a must as both hands on the wheel were a must. They ran the smallest input and largest motor pullies they could find. Damn the tranny as most were junkyard dogs anyway and one was often on a paper route income. They raced on a dirt track ala sprint car as pavement would have been suicide.

Old indian trick is to run a wire from the govenor to the dash or better yet remove the guvner completely ... a few extra rpm's for those photo finnishes!!

We are talking about having races at next years Big Show... cept with us old goats is gonna be to see who can idle their tractor down the lowest as the slowest guy wins!!!

Good luck and :WRS:

Great story WHX7. I've got a 4 inch tranny pulley on the way from Dave here, and I'll remove the governor if I  can figure out how or will zip tie it or something to get a few more RPM. I know I took the governor off my old mini bike when I was a kid. Surprised I never killed the motor or myself.

My MF is lower to the ground but was much slower to start with so sticking with the Horse. I'mI'm not looking to go crazy, at least not this year.

Well, I almost won the race this year. A new guy moved in the week before, and showed up with a big John Deere that I wouldn't consider a lawn tractor, but it did have a mower deck and that is our only rule. He beat me by less than a foot. Everybody loved the noise mine made, and when I popped a wheelie that was a big hit. Now I'm trying to decide what to do with it next. I could try to find a bigger engine pulley, or maybe even a smaller drive pulley. Also thinking about some more horsepower with a bigger engine.

I'll post a video of the race start as soon as I remember to have my wife send it to me. Here's a pic of the Wheel Horse
