6wheeler 669 #1 Posted July 30, 2016 Hi all. I am doing a tune up on the neighbor ladies 520. It is a 1988 520 HC and only has 298 hours on it. The deck is a 1995 and looks barely used. She came down and said it needed a new belt for the mower part, she couldn't figure out how it broke. And could I get it running better for her. I went and got the poor tractor. It barely ran. But, I was able to drive it here. About a half a mile. I did a compression test and it is 105psi on each cylinder. All was going well until I took the deck off to sharpen the blades and grease it, only to find about 25 feet of baler twine and some landscape silk wrapped up in the blades. After cutting all that crap out I could finally turn the deck. Surprisingly, the blades are in excellent condition. Sharpening was all that was needed. Unfortunately, the tractor looks like it was shot at and missed and, $#!^ at and hit. It is one of those "The key goes here, Gas goes here. Start it and go situations". Her husband passed away. She needs the help. Anyway, the questions. Is there a charging system fuse on these like the 520H? I can only find 2 fuses on it. Both fuses are good. It doesn't charge. Also PTO switches. I ran it before replacing the deck and belt and could engage it with no trouble. After putting the belt on? I wants to kill the motor. There are 2 switches stacked one on top of the other. Why? The bottom switch is the culprit because I disconnected the top switch ant it still did it. Why does it need the two switches. The seat switch is working fine.. After an oil change and hydro oil change . New plugs and wires, and some fresh gas. It runs great. Just these 2 issues to check out. If she ever decides to get rid of it? I know where it will be living..... Thanks in advance guys. Pat

N3PUY 1,031 #3 Posted July 30, 2016 Are you on the seat when engaging the deck?
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,534 #4 Posted July 31, 2016 If it is not charging I would venture to guess the voltage regulator is bad. You can put a volt meter on the wire coming from behind the flywheel to the regulator. You should have mid 30's there and about 14 coming out of the regulator.
