Golf cart quiet kohler

Something ive been wanting to explore is, making my wheel horse kohlers quieter. My family and I frequently camp and hang out at the local camp ground a few county roads over. We always take a horse or two with carts to ride around with but anything above idle is too loud for most folks and disturbs the quiet. What are some recomendations for lowering the db level and making it golfcart quiet or better?

Many moons ago I did a lot of welding with a Kohler powered Lincoln welder mounted on the back of a Cushman three wheeler. I bought an automotive muffler and the fittings to hook it up, so quiet I could carry on a conversation right next to it.

So a small auto muffler is the trick? Damn i feel stupid. Did you rout it out the back or under away from you?

I don't remember what the muffler was from, but it was not small, used a belled pipe fitting to go from 1" up to 2" then a 90 with a nipple and the muffler went up on top with a brace coming down. Of course this was on the back of a three wheel industrial cart, for your application you would want a smaller one; could be straight up or may be able to fabricate a bracket that will go into the mid mount tach-a matic and a tail pipe out the back.

Humm. The 312's we take have alot of clearance under. I wonder if we could go down under, go in by the break and come out he by the clutch pedal with a muffler below?

A long pipe in itself will reduce noise, so running it underneath is the first thing I'd do. Next, I think I'd look into RV power plant mufflers, they're always quiet --- and, usually have a long pipe.

The exhaust noise is the hot exhaust air reacting with the cool outside air.  An exhaust system is actually cooling the air.   The air coming out of the tailpipe is much colder than the air in the exhaust manifold.  A muffler increases the length of the exhaust system.   A straight thru muffler is a loud exhaust system.

Here is what I did on my 18 Hp Vanguard. It's not as quite as you want. It was a straight pipe before the washers were added. This killed the high pitch noise and made it 

acceptable. The first washer has 1" hole and the outer ones are 3/4" they are seperated with 1/4" nuts that I drilled the treads out. This should quiteing a muffler as mine has nothing else in it.
