K181 over 4000 rpm at wot

Recommended Posts

I have set the governor with the carburetor at wot and and at 1/2 throttle. It will max at about 3600 at 1/2 throttle. Is this normal or do I need to readjust something?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Jay

Governors are set with the carb at wide open throtte only with the engine not running.

To limit rpms you need to limit the throttle cable travel so it can't exceed the max rpm with the engine running.

Thanks Garry. I was thinking that but wanted to get professional advice.

Common issue with the engines that use the "disc" type governor connection.

If it still has that small arm welded to the disc, you can connect the cable to that to give more movement of the push/pull control. The idea being, the farther away from the center it is connectedt, the farther it has to travel to achieve the same result.

Thanks John. I think that is where it is connected. When I get caught up on chores around the house I'll take another look at it. I sure don't want to blow the motor up before I even get it broke in.

Look on YouTube Jay to see if someone has a video for one of the older K engines like yours. I learned how to set the governor on a Kohler Magnum engine using YouTube
