vmen84 61 #1 Posted July 5, 2016 I'm new here I was stopping in to say hello and ask if you questions I don't have a wheel horse tractor just yet what I'm looking into getting one and I was going to asking questions regarding him I found one that is just awesome I'm fascinated by it I'm not sure the make or model I know that it's a 36 inch deck with rear discharge 8 hp and a pull start with the Briggs& Stratton motor . My concerns are that I only use one arm and one of the levers is on the left side . My other question is I have a smaller yard and a john deere stx 38 inch deck that barely fits through the gate I'm hoping the wheel horse well fit if i get it . thanks for the help

953 nut 60,128 #3 Posted July 5, 2016 I doubt that the Brigs is an original engine but it is probably an 875, 876 or 877 based on a quick glance. There should be an information plate on the riser under the dash that will have your model number.

vmen84 61 #5 Posted July 5, 2016 It looks like a really nice tractor. I was going to talk to the guy about it tonight like I said my only concerns were my gate The lever on the left side as I only use my right arm and the cost for parts if I ever need to fix it and it looks like it will need decals as well but that's just me. I was also wondering if you can plow snow with these well at least the driveway anyway. Any suggestions are welcome thanks again.
vmen84 61 #7 Posted July 5, 2016 Thanks it should be a fun journey. I'm just hoping the wife allows me to get it and it fits through my gate.
N3PUY 1,031 #9 Posted July 5, 2016 I think the lift lever can be converted to electric. I've never done it but I know someone on here has. "linear actuator" Like this.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/15-inch-stroke-linear-actuator-1061LBS-ACME-screws-12V-24VDC-/271254587089?hash=item3f280886d1:g:7oEAAOxyRHdRzQms
DougC 2,643 #10 Posted July 5, 2016 Hello and Enjoy the forum! Measure the gate opening and the total width of tractor with mower deck attached and then you will know how fast you need to go to get through the gate! As a young man I once tried to drive an 8 foot tall 1979 Chevy conversion van with luggage rack on top into garage with a a 7 foot door.......Bad idea......

So its "measure twice, throttle three times"???

wallfish 18,154 #15 Posted July 5, 2016 They plow snow VERY well. The lever on the left is the attachment lift lever but they can be converted to an electric lift like posted above.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,610 #16 Posted July 5, 2016 I seen that one on CL. I was going to reply to the ad, but thought against it as I was wanting something else. Let us know if you go see it.
vmen84 61 #17 Posted July 6, 2016 (edited) Im very serouisly thinking about it my only other concern is the pull start not that I can't start a lawnmower but I'm not sure how many pulls it will take as it might be different considering it's an older mower and might take a little bit more power. Being as they only use the one arm Edited July 6, 2016 by vmen84
vmen84 61 #18 Posted July 6, 2016 Quick update I'm going to look at the tractor Saturday the owner said he believes it's an 877 if I looked it up correctly that would be the 1967 model he also told me that if I want to put any attachments on the back such as the garden plow I would have to run a cable to do so. he also said that He wasn't sure if I could put a a snowplow on it I'm hoping that I can if I get it. he said he bought it about five years and it's sitting at garage collecting dust but he does start it every few weeks the reason why he doesn't use it to mow anymore is because he bought a zero turn mower. I also had a question about blades if I do get the mower if I ever have to replace the blades what I just call Toro and ask them? Even if I did put a snowplow on there could the 8 hp motor handle that?
ClassicTractorProfessor 5,371 #19 Posted July 6, 2016 I would think that the 8 hp would be able to push snow without too much problem...and you can get a snowplow for those models...I'm not sure but I think the one I have is actually for a short frame tractor like the one you are looking at...my 1277 is a long frame and when I mount my plow up I cannot turn the blade to either side without it hitting the front wheels As far as blades for the mowers I don't know which deck you're looking at but my Toro dealer told me they can't get the blades for mine (RL-486). Not sure if that's true or not the parts lady I usually talk to was on vacation the day I checked on them...blew my engine 3 days later so gave up on looking for blades for a while lol
vmen84 61 #20 Posted July 6, 2016 its a 36 inch rear discharge deck
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,610 #21 Posted July 6, 2016 Here is an explanation of snow blades (plows are what you use for turning dirt). For a front mounted blade to be effective, you need traction and rear weight. I would either get ag (lugs, bar, etc) tires for the rear or get tire chains. Chains will provide better grip, but can damage concrete or asphalt driveways. To use a moldboard plow, you will need the clevis hitch, or a slot hitch with clevis adapter, and the lift cable mechanism. Again, traction and weight is required.
vmen84 61 #22 Posted July 6, 2016 I'm assuming these are kind of costly?
bslms 19 #23 Posted July 6, 2016 That tractor looks like it is in very nice condition. Should last you a long time. Get it, if it doesn't fit thru the gate, get a wider gate. The tractor will probably outlast your fence anyway. Good luck, and I hope that the electric lift is something that works for you should you decide to go with that trac. Keep us posted on your progress.
elcamino/wheelhorse 9,362 #24 Posted July 6, 2016 The cost of the rear hitches depends. I found a clevis hitch at the Big Show for $40.00 , The cable can be purchased from Wheelhorse 1000( he is a vendor on the site. If you need blades I think Partstree may have them. I have purchased blades from Tractor Supply. You may find tire chains at a junk yard or flea market. The chains on one of my tractors are car chains that were shorted to fit the tractor ( my father was very cheap). By the way Welcome to Red Square.
