Recommended Posts

my 310-8 fires on the first few cranks when cold no problem barely have to choke, but when the engine is hot it cranks and cranks then spits out black smokes and sputters to full rpms. Any ideas on what could could be causing this? i know you guys are like a book on this forum.

Float level, mixture setting. Your engine is getting way too much fuel. That's why it starts right up when cold with little choke.

:text-yeahthat:

Black smoke is excess un-burnt fuel.

Hi erwine,

She's clearing her throat from excess fuel when warm. Hey, it's just an opportunity to spend some time with your machine. It wants some lovin'. There are the usual checks - choke stuck in the ON position - very dirty air cleaner. Was the carb adjusted when the engine was cold? Was it adjusted with the air filter removed? Warm it up and adjust the carb and then see if it clears. If not, pull the carb and clean it - solvent and compressed air through the passages. Don't get any solvent on the gaskets. With today's fuel quality, you might find some trash in the bowl. The float is an on/off valve for the fuel level and the level is too high the engine will be rich so it's good to get in there and verify the adjustment and to ensure that the valve (needle and seat) isn't clogged or dirty. Once you have it clean and the float adjusted to the right level - the manual for the Magnum 10 is on this forum - put her back on there and adjust it when warm.

Check your fuel lines, tank, and filters, since these can cause havoc also.  I cleaned up a carb, only to have trash in the tank clog the lines.

There is no hose under the carb.  The fuel hoses are rubber, so you can't see bubbles anyway.  Now ask about the fuel filter.
