WH 414/16-8 needed a ride

Recommended Posts

N3PUY

I gave this poor tractor a ride home today.

I've been dealing on this 414/16-8 for a week now.

I had only seen it in pictures but I went to get it today anyways.

One side of the hood had a 414-8 decal and the others side has a 416-8 decal.

I pressure washed it and the 414-8 decal flaked right off.

The Onan P216 motor runs but has a noise.... sounds like a rod.  The PO told me that when we started dealing.

Has good Deestone 23/10.5x12 ags on the rear.   And a really solid RD deck.

Wow, that thing fit in the back of that Dodge Caravan.  That's awesome.  It must be a Grand Caravan, as I had a regular 2002 Caravan and I'm sure it isn't long enough for one to fit in.

It's an Onan..... a very noisy Onan.   Sounds like connecting rod.  It's only got 580 hours on the meter.  But I don't know if it works.

Well, I thought I'ld look it over a little after it got washed.  Not too bad of condition.  But the motor ..... will an oil change help? Probably not when pieces come out of the drain hole.

From what I see it never had an oil change, really dirty.  Never need an oil change because the 90 fitting on the drain pipe is very loose and leaks.  Just add oil. When I took the oil drain cap off the first thing that came out was a rollpin.  Where in the engine did that come from?  It's not bent or damaged.   Then the black oil came out.  And the oil filter is an Onan.... original?  Most WH owners around here go the a parts store and get a NAPA or Wix or Hastings filter.  I'll put a new filter on it and 30W and see what happens.  I know the oil change won't replace the rollpin.

The engine has a problem ..... the front piston doesn't move!    It is down and that is where it stays.  Looks like I'll be tearing it apart just to see what happened.

I got some of the motor apart and found some history.   It's been into before .... clear and black silicone instead of new gaskets.

And on the inside of the belt guard is "C-161".   What happened to the original guard?   I was expecting to find the cooling fins packed with oil and grass .... they are nice and clean.

The ignition module has been replaced ... the old one was in the box in the seat pocket.

Better put a great big :wh:  decal on both front doors and a Caution, Wheel Horse aboard! signage displayed on the rear lift gate window.....

I would have never believed a :wh: would fit inside a minivan, and that being said...... Better stop there before I get banned.......   :text-coolphotos:

I got it pretty much stripped down.   Doesn't even look the same now!

IMG_0652 (800x600).jpg

And here's pics of the front cylinder.   It actually ran on just the rear cylinder.  It could be driven around.  It was just noisy.

If the piston wasn't moving how did all that stuff get in there?

And now pics of the inside.   Crank looks OK.  Might just need a rod and piston.  BUT where did that rollpin come from?  And I still hear a "clunk" when the rear piston reaches the top.

So it probably has something wrong there too.

I found the noise ..... the remaining rod has excessive play on the crank.

Tankman:  I had a 416-8 with a Kohler.  Sold it a few months ago.

Searching the parts manual for the engine, there are very few pins listed, and only one roll pin (dowel pin, actually)

I have a P220 Onan for sale if you are interested in just replacing it. It has under 500 hrs on it and I bought it from a member on here for a spare, but spare engines take up too much room ;).

I can ship via fastenal if you are interested. PM me for details.
