Tecumseh h55d

Hi all, new to the forums here, looking for any and all advice you think might be useful.

My my dad and I are currently trying to breathe new life into an old tiller that's been sitting for years. The engine is a Tecumseh h55d, and we need to get the carb off to clean it, but we can't for the life of us figure out how to remove the second nut holding the carb on. It's too tight to get any kind of socket or wrench that we have in there! If any of you are familiar with this older engine, id appreciate any help you can give. I haven't been able to get any info anywhere else, only that's not a very common engine. Thanks in advance!

I don't have one on hand and I stumbled onto the forum at work. The nut is tightly sandwiched in between the carb and the breather pipe, and a throttle linkage bracket is also right on top of it which isn't helping. We just can't get any type of wrench or socket in there. I'll try to post a picture after work if I remember.

1st of all, :WRS:

I have some "cheap" wrenches that I use to bend, grind, customize when necessary....will grinding an open end wrench facilitate getting it into the tight spot?

I just heated and bent a 90* ell on a 7/16" box-end wrench to hold a nut in a very bad spot!

The spacer between the carb and block should have small notches to allow a long phillips head screwdriver in there to remove the spacer from the block with the carb still on it.

But you need to take the air cleaner off first.

Pic from another thread and it's not an H55D but they should be the same thing, unless yours has a Tolliston carb on it. The other screw is bottom right
