520H starting problem

Recommended Posts

Got a 520H and it's been running just fine, even mowed two days ago.  Today the dash lights come on but when you turn to the start position absolutely nothing happens.  No clicking or cranking.  I've got the brake pressed, it's in neutral, the mower deck is not engaged, and the battery is charged.  Fuses look good and I added some oil since it was just a tick below the bottom line.  The only thing that is odd is that there's not much resistance on the speed control lever (where normally it feels like there is) and I can push the tractor in across the yard freely (whereas I'd get resistance from the transmission), yet I don't know if that's related at all or if it's my imagination!  I jumped the starter with the ignition on and nothing happened (jumper cables on battery, ground to frame and positive to the red wire on the starter).  Am I missing something?  Anything else I can try before I take it to a shop?  Electrical is not my strong suit and I'm afraid it's either electrical or something to do with the tranny/shift linkage.

Battery terminals dirty ?  Try checking the starter with a jump from your car .
