58 RJ Red Wheels to White -Time for a Change!

This tractor was my first round hood that I purchased back in 2008 (maybe 2007) from VinsRJ. I restored it for my son and it was his first wheel horse he rode. At the time I knew that white was the correct color for the 58 wheels but liked the look of the red. Anyhow I finally decided to change the color to Antique White Rusto. Paint is drying now. I mounted a NOS set of diamond tread Bridgestones I recently picked up on a set of rims. Not sure if they are going on the RJ or if I am going to repaint the red rears and keep the original Silverton ags on it. Tomorrow I will mount them up and decide then.

I got up early this morning before work and put the rear wheels on. I think I like it... (Sorry for the misdirected pics). Having issues using Iphone to take and save pics.

I do like those diamond treads..something nostalgic about them. (Of course they are on an old tractor too..so it cld be that.)

I recently purchased them off CL. They are NOS with the label still on them.

I like the new paint on the wheels. I would have kept the Ags on the rear, but hey, what do I know? The Bridgestones give it a Lawn Ranger style look and that looks nice too. Either way it's a sweet tractor.

Looks great Steve. The red wasn't bad but as you know I thought it was too much red. She pops now! Are you going to put a dolly under the tractor and push it around to protect the NOS tires and factory label?

I once knew a guy who collected Mustangs and only took them to "Judged" shows, real trophy hound. He would wrap the tires in saran wrap, push the car from the ramp of the enclosed trailer to the parking spot then carefully trim the saran wrap off the tires so there wouldn't be any stones or blades of grass in the treads.

My dad collected old Chevys, and restored about 3 in his lifetime.  So I grew up going to shows and national meets and I've witnessed some of this kind of crazy stuff.  As a kid i remember seeing these things and thinking (even at 8-12 years of age) that these guys have something wrong with them.  My dad would transform into a little different character even on judging day.  He wasn't that bad but I do remember disagreements with judges over what is correct and what's not!

 

I remember one guy had a beautiful restored '38 Chevrolet Master.  We were at a regional Mid-West meet, multi-day event.  He hauled it there in an enclosed trailer, only drove it into the lot for the few hours it took to judge it.  He freaked out when one of the judges put his palm on the front bumper to raise himself up after inspecting underneath.  "Don't touch the chrome, man!  You have acid in your skin that will tarnish it!  I just spent blah-blah $$ getting these rechromed, blah-blah blah!"  

 

That ain't for me.  I enjoy using and driving vehicles.  Not constantly cleaning and polishing and preserving.  It's more fun to use them.  I don't go to car shows much anymore, but my favorites to see are the unrestored survivors!   

 

Steve, your tractor looks great with the beige wheels.  I like it!

 

I want to restore a  one of these days just because I think it would be a fun project.  Probably when I retire.  I think it would be awesome to have an old restored RJ or Suburban that looks new and use it to mow, push snow etc.  It would be fun to just see folks reaction that drive by and see this good looking old tractor being worked!
