They always run best before they blow

Was starting to mow with the 1277 today and thought to myself that the old girl sure was running good...about a half pass around the yard and BOOM threw a rod and grenaded the block...shooting a piece of the block right past me...guess I'm on the hunt for another K301 now

I think that block is toast. Lucky you did not get hit by the pieces of metal flying by.

Yeah it's done for...I thought at first I had hit a rock or something until I noticed that I and the tractor were both covered in oil

Trust me she will live again...just gonna take some time to locate another engine for it...got to get it loaded up and back to the house so I can tear it apart and figure out what is salvageable and what isn't...I know it put a pretty good knick in the crank journal and shelled the block but beyond that I don't know

Sorry to hear.

:(

I just checked my stash and have a good 10hp block from the same era that was an oil burner before the rod broke. Somehow the block survived without damage.

It's free if you pay shipping.

Pm if interested and I'll send pics?

Update...got her loaded on the trailer finally...kept telling my wife that winch I put on the back of the pickup would come in handy someday ...got home pulled out the battery and got the gen out of the way so I could go fishing :text-lol: dug around in all the oil and found what's left of my rod as well as a couple more pieces of the block...even took a chunk out of the cylinder wall as well...I was and still am pretty upset as this was the first tractor in our herd and my baby but when I look at the damage I have to laugh a little...like a friend told me when I blew the motor in my 84 Chevy Suburban a few years back • Man when you blow one up, you BLOW it UP!"

Yep...I know the 350 in the old Suburban did...it was running better than ever before that day...same with this one but I have never seen a K-Series come apart like this before

. Bryce,

Like most here, glad you didn't get any shrapnel wounds.Hope that  folks here take to heart that these engines can cause severe injuries if they grenade. Luck,JAinVA.

Yes they can...and not only to the operator but to any bystanders as well...the big piece that has the other half of the threads for the dipstick is the one that flew by me...found it about 25-30 feet away underneath the apple tree...so yes everyone be careful

looks like a rod bolt backed out or broke causing your problem. I had a C120 that threw a rod. when i pulled it apart and it looked like the bolts broke or backed out, luckily it didn't hurt the block and I had it rebuilt. good luck

Eric,

That's what I'm thinking as well the one bolt that is visible in the picture is still intact as well as both the rod and the cap on that side the other bolt is still holding the other half of the rod/cap assembly together.
