Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

This picture is from my C-125. The left side has grease around the wheel axle but the right side is clean as a whistle. I don't see any greasy fittings and the tranny uses oil.  So

I'm perplexed as to where this comes from.

Not unusual to find this old sellers trick...

a little grease applied to a leaky axle seal.

Works just long enough for you to get it home.

:WRS:      It isn't normal, but it is rather common. Axle oil seals leak a bit from time to time. Jack up the side that is leaking and try to move the wheel side to side and up and down; if there is no play then it is just a bad oil seal, if there is movement then a bad bearing causing the oil seal failure. Let us know what you find.

Ok, thanks. I'll pull it into the garage in the morning when Florida cools down a bit and check. Are the seals and bearings hard to replace?

(are you guys talking about the seals and bearings in the wheel hub or axle housing?)

I think the seals are easy to replace,  but the transmission case has to be split to replace bearings.

But that looks like "Red Grease" not gear oil.  Seems like it was smeared on the axle.  Clean it off and see if it reappears!

I couldn't wait. The axle seems nice and snug in its housing. It does have quite a bit of play in the hub to axle junction. I cleaned it and will monitor it for any leakage.

The question now is why the play in the hub. Are those bolts with lock nuts used to tighten it down?

Yes. Back the lock nut up and tighten the setscrew then lock it in place. Before doing you should pull the hub and inspect the key and keyways. There shouldn't be any play even with the setscrew loose. :)

If you get in a bind and need a hand I'm only about a half hour away.

There's 4 seals. One in the end of the axle housings (sometimes they are double seals so 2 on each axle housing and 6 total), one on the input shaft and one on the brake shaft. As long as the hubs, pulley and brake drum come off it's a piece of cake to replace them. No need to open it up. Bearings would require opening it. Don't fret over that. It's really pretty easy. As I mentioned, I'd be glad to help you out. Once you see how easy it is you'll be off and running. :)

Thanks Doug but there's a bunch of guys here that would be willing and have helped others out in person. I've also been the recipient. There's not many opportunities down here with the rarity of Wheel Horses so when I saw Ormond Beach and a guy who may need a hand I'm chomping at the bit. :banana-skier:

So I took a look at the set screws and they were in fact loose. I snugged them up. I plan on pulling the hubs this week to check the keeper.

How is the hub attached? I know that there is a keeper key to stop rotation around the axle but what keeps the hub from sliding off the axle?

Friction, and those set screws locked down.

Might be a good time to replace 'em, while you're in there.

:text-yeahthat: Later on they started using two setscrews per hub that are 90 degrees apart. A lot of guys drill and tap for the second one on the older hubs. That would be something to consider. You mentioned there is 'play' in the hub with the setscrew loose. What type of play are you talking about? Just sliding in and out isn't a problem but rotational would indicate a damaged key and/or keyways. Sloppy like the axle is too small for the hub is another problem. The picture you posted kinda bugs me. The axle housing is relatively clean but the hub is filthy. Did you clean the housing? Also, the grease looks to be concentrated on the hub and not the seal end of the housing like it would be if they tried to hide a bad seal. How long have you had this tractor? :)

Bob, I've had this tractor a week or so now. There are two set screws, one of which was a bit loose. The hub was sloppy as if the axle was too small. Not in a rotational manner. After I tightened the set screws that went away. I plan on pulling the hub this week to see what's lurking inside.

It's good that you have two setscrews but bad about the slop. There shouldn't be any at all. Hopefully it's the hub and not the axle but either way it's not a difficult fix but you'll need parts. I would check both hubs and post a picture. I've only got an extra set of three lug hubs and they are for 1" axles. If we can determine what you need maybe a member that's going to the big show can help you out and I can bring the stuff back to save you the shipping cuz they are heavy. :)

By the way, do you know the year of your tractor? Better yet, the model number.

It would be something like 12K802 which is a 1981 8-speed.

I have a C101 that the hub really wobbled.  I fixed it with JBWeld putty stick.  It has worked fine.

Unfortunately there's no data tag on the frame or the engine.  I think it's roughly a 1980 C-125 with a Kohler K301.  I wish there was a way to pin that info down.

I was hoping to get you the correct manuals. There's not much difference between the years so we can get close enough. When you get a chance why don't you post some pictures of it. We all love pictures. :):wwp:

I just noticed that you asked about the supporter thing. At the top of the page you'll see a "Store (Support RS)" Click on that and you can choose the tine. It's well worth it. You'll be able to post all the pictures you want and see the supporters only section. And you'll get your name in red. :)
