WheelHorse79 271 #1 Posted May 31, 2016 I bought a RJ/Suburban mower deck over the weekend. The seller said that to engage the deck, you have to keep your foot resting on the engagement pedal. He said that if you take your foot off the pedal, the mower will disengage. Is that true? Thanks
stevebo-(Moderator) 8,534 #2 Posted May 31, 2016 If that is the case then something is not set up right. Typically you should be able to push down and it will be spring loaded and stay down until you push the other way.
WheelHorse79 271 #3 Posted June 1, 2016 Thanks. I didn't receive a spring with the deck, so do you have any pictures of where it is located and the size of the spring?

Thanks Although I own but never mounted or used a deck on a RJ, I also do own and have used extensively a deck on a 551 Suburban. If it is a 551 Suburban we are talking about I understand what he is saying so I will try to make it as clear as possible. That setup is a little unusual to say the least. There are no springs as far as i know to keep pedal in engaged position. To do that that system relies on the bent part of the rod coming from pulleys to go over 3/4 bar onto which the foot rest (and deck pedal) is mounted. If everything is correct it should stay until you pry it up. However if belt coming from PTO to deck pulley is too short the pedal in question will always want to come back towards the PTO specially if belt does not allow it to fully "lock" over round bar. That is why he is saying you must keep your foot on it which in any case is not a hard thing to do since your foot when naturally on the foot rest is pretty much there, all you need to do is to move your toes up just a bit. There is however some adjustment in that rod to compensate for that. Hopefully the photos will help you. Edited June 1, 2016 by formariz

There is also a part with another rod that goes to the rear of tractor that is essential to keep it level. Hopefully you have that. If you need more and better photos I will take them tomorrow in the day light. Edited June 1, 2016 by formariz
