Steve A W 30 #1 Posted May 18, 2016 I need some help with the hitch on my 856. Does the "Lift Cable" need to be disconnected when the mower deck is hooked up? It was disconnected when I got the tractor. So I tried to hook it to the lowest hole the way I saw on a diagram someone posted a while back and I can't lift the mower deck with it hooked on. The cable moves free and the hitch moves, though it's stiff. I saw a picture where someone made a bracket and bolted it to the trans axle bolt. Is this safe? Thanks for any help. Racinbob 11,946 #2 Posted May 18, 2016 No, you don't need to disconnect it providing you have the correct parts. The lowest hole will give you the maximum lift so try a hole closer to the pivot point. The lift itself may be hitting the transmission and not allowing you to lift the deck all the way. There's a drawing somewhere but I can't find it right now.
Racinbob 11,946 #3 Posted May 18, 2016 Pondering your situation I believe the lower hole is correct. If I'm right I'm that could indicate that your cable is too short. It should be approx. 25" center to center on the pins.
Steve A W 30 #4 Posted May 18, 2016 (edited) Racinbob I measured the cable and it is 25", still has remnants of red paint on the clevis . The lift rod for the mower deck is in the far hole, according to the picture I found it should be in the top hole. I'm going out to try it now, then it's time to help with kid's homework. Racinbob 11,946 #5 Posted May 18, 2016 I think you found the problem. It has nothing to do with the hitch. Make that switch and I'll bet you'll be fine.
Steve A W 30 #6 Posted May 20, 2016 I was wrong, the mower deck is hooked up right. I pulled it out this morn and studied it some more. I noticed the cable housing is sticking out about 1,5" from the trans housing. I checked pictures on this site and none of them have the housing out this far. I'm heading out to see how to loosen the housing and adjust it in. If that doesn't work I'll be back for more help. Steve A W
