MalMac 1,332 #1 Posted May 18, 2016 Short story, having to put balance gears back in a Mag 14. Been along time since I have had to put any back in. I have always left them out. I have forgotten what a pain it is to time them right. Defiantly a lesson in patience.
KC9KAS 4,744 #2 Posted May 18, 2016 Why are you putting the balance gears back in? I have read a lot on this subject, and the consensus was to leave them out.
MalMac 1,332 #3 Posted May 18, 2016 I always left them out. I re-did a Mag 14 and ended up with a very bad ultra sonic vibration. After checking everything and doing some research, I found out that Mag 14's and 16's do not like to have their balance gears removed. I could not figure why. So I talk to Kohler themselves and then found it buried real deep on Brian Millers web site. So that's why there going back in. It comes down to the type of piston and rod used in relation to the the crank that is used in a Mag 14 and 16. All these years of rebuilds and end up learning something the hard way and costly. So be aware if you rebuild a Kohler Mag 14 or 16.
