dsoly 2 #1 Posted May 16, 2016 Hi all, I have a 416-8 with an Onan. This tractor is driving me nuts. Starts and runs excellent, but randomly stalls. No surging no loss of lights or charging , nothing. But it starts right back up every time. I've changed fuel pump, filter, fuel line, new fuse block and did the battery wire mod on the 9 pin connector. It's totally got me stumped. I've also bypassed seat switch. daveoman1966 3,841 #2 Posted May 16, 2016 What you describe is how a bad condenser would act. When cold, the condenser is ok, but when it gets up to engine temp, it begins to fail....resulting in no engine spark. Now, I don't know if the Onan engines have the condenser like a Kohler has, but it is just a thought. Dave
cleat 7,263 #3 Posted May 16, 2016 For some reason the Onan uses the condenser on the positive side. Unsure how this could work, but I guess Onan engineers deemed it so. My 416 would sometimes backfire when I turned the key on with a hot engine before actually cranking it. I replaced the condenser and that stopped so I guess that is what it is for. I would go through all the wiring, seat switch, PTO switches, ignition switch, 9 pin connector etc and make sure everything is tight and the connectors look good and clean. I wonder if a bad ignition switch would do this and when you touch it to restart, it regains connection for a while. If it were running out of fuel, the filter would be empty. That is how I found one of my 520's had a bad pump.

dsoly 2 #6 Posted May 17, 2016 It's a p216. I changed key switch, now it starts as soon as I'm in run position. Thanks boomer I have a 315 classic, raider 14, 416-h, with a transplanted p220, and a 417-8. Boomer , all of these tractors have been great, Onans, and kohlers. But this one is giving me fits. Thinking its needing the engine pulled off and everything gone through
