BenTheWheelHorseMan 43 #1 Posted May 15, 2016 Is it common for wheel horse belt guards to hit? I have a 1972 charger 12 that has a severe run on the drive belt on the top of the guard. After just a few minutes the guard gets so hot that you cannot touch it. What could be causing this?
wallfish 18,151 #2 Posted May 15, 2016 The belt should not be touching the guard. You may have a belt that is too long which will allow the engaging idler pulley to ride up higher and the belt will rub. The guard may move up a little if you loosen all the bolts. It's possible it's mounted just a little low allowing the belt to rub.
BenTheWheelHorseMan 43 #3 Posted May 15, 2016 I just took the belt guard off today to see if I could get it to sit higher but no dice. When I bought it I don't recall it having a rub. I took it off to clean it and it has had the run ever since. It is not a serious problem right now as I haven't run it much and it is more of a tractor for me to putt around on at local shows. I am sure however that if I let it go I will be replacing the belt soon.
squonk 43,844 #4 Posted May 16, 2016 How old is the belt? Contrary to many beliefs, belts don't stretch. The sides wear down causing them to run deeper in the pulleys giving the illusion that the belt is now too long. Could it be possible the belt is now worn enough that it's "too long" now and rubbing?
Retired Wrencher 5,792 #5 Posted May 16, 2016 Ben I would go to the manuals section here and find out what belt you need. So at least you will have the #. I make a list of all belt #`s so when it is time it make it easy to fix.

I have no idea how old the belt is. It is the same one that I bought it with 3 ish years ago. It is very possible that the belt could possibly be too long. It would make sense because the belt guard is line up in all mounting holes and everything. Also thanks everybody for the advice on the belt numbers. I may just buy a new belt and see where that puts me.
