520h possible valve issue

Recommended Posts

LAWRENCE JEWETT

Hi folks, I just bought a 1995 520h with only 244 hours on the clock. It sat outside most of the time, so it is pretty faded and possible signs of neglect. It was running a bit rough so I cleaned the carb by removing just the top and also put in a spare coil from my parts engine. The engine seems to be running fairly smoothly now. I also ordered a new vacuum gauge from Ebay and installed it yesterday. My concern is that the new gauge needle flutters at all vacuum levels. I also tried a second gauge (I bought two) and a vacuum gauge from my auto tune up kit. They also flutter.  I have read online that this is a sign of a possible valve issue.  What are your thoughts and experience?  I find it hard to believe that the engine can have the dreaded valve seat issue at 244 hours of run time. I have added a dose of Seafoam to the gas and hopes that it cleans any possible internal carbon issues.  thanks, Larry Jewett

Always check the compression first.  A valve issue will cause low compression.  It is possible that you have a rusted valve from the poor storage.  If the compression is normal, then go on to fuel and ignition problems.  Some flutter is to be expected, major flutter can be caused by issues besides the basic engine.
