Texas Todd 1,025 #1 Posted May 10, 2016 (edited) I have a K301S in a 1056 ((factory 12hp repower)) and a K301AS in a C-121 (which has no compression, broke connecting rod, I believe) The blown motor (AS) is in the cradle mount. The 1056 has the deep pan bolted straight to frame. Does anyone know if I remove the cradle, can I bolt the engine with the deep well pan onto the C-121 frame? Or would it be better to pull the cradle type oil pan off the bad engine and put it on the good engine off the 1056? Thanks! I have searched with no luck. I hope that makes sense. If your head doesn't hurt, mine does. Edited May 10, 2016 by TVR
953 nut 60,238 #2 Posted May 10, 2016 If you unbolt both motors from their oil pans and swap the motor you will save yourself a lot of unnecessary work. Make sure the oil dipper won't hit the oil pan.
Texas Todd 1,025 #3 Posted May 10, 2016 I am hoping someone knows if the dippers are different lengths. I don't have another gasket handy, but what you say makes sense. Would be worth finding another gasket if its that straight forward. Thanks!

Shynon 7,482 #5 Posted May 11, 2016 A deep pan block will not bolt to a cradle mount oil pan. You can remove the cradle pan motor and the cast engine mounting blocks and I believe the deep pan block will bolt directly to the frame.

Racinbob 11,977 #7 Posted May 11, 2016 (edited) I don't think the oil pans can be swapped but the 301S will bolt right to the C-121 if you remove the shaker mount. I tried the oil pan swap years ago with hopes of eliminating the shaker mount on C-141 and found out AFTER I bought the oil pan about the blocks being different. tbarnhart 240 #11 Posted May 11, 2016 There's a great sticky thread at the top of the engine section about the different block designs on the Kohler K. Everything you need to know.

Texas Todd 1,025 #13 Posted May 15, 2016 Well I got it swapped. Learned a few things. I had to get the lower hoop bracket as the cradle has the lower hoop bracket built in. Also the two hoops are different lengths so had to get a long pto hoop as well (1" longer). The cradle is up higher than the bracket bolted to frame. I was under the false assumption that everything was interchangeable......not as I am learning. Put the rear discharge 42"deck from the C-121 on my 312-8 with no issues but looks like the side discharge on the C-121 will be a problem. The lift arm is dangerously close to the center grease zerk. Appears that if the lift handle peg was on the other side (cut and welded to point the other way, it would work fine. Wondering if anyone has experienced this? The things we learn by trial and error.....mostly error...hah!
