Excessive Idle

Hi all I'm looking for some much needed advice. Last year my Wheel Horse B-80 started running erratic & idled up really high. I couldn't get it to idle back down. I rebuilt the carb this month. That didn't seem to help. My linkage rod that connects to the idle adjustment and the back of the throttle broke. I bent a new 90 degree bend in that linkage. I'm thinking I need a new one. Any thoughts? Thanks for any & all help!

Sounds like making that bend in the rod may have made it too short & now the governor can't close the carburetor all the way to idle position. To confirm this theory, remove the linkage and try holding the throttle closed against the idle screw. If it idles then you will need to replace the linkage or make a new one to be the correct length.

The length of the connection shouldn't matter too much unless it is binding on something but you will need to do an adjustment on the governor arm if you change the length of it.

Click on the manual section up top and do a search for your engine. The manual covers how to adjust the governor and it's the same for most of the K series engines and it's a fairly simple process.

I'm assuming it's a K181 8hp engine since you didn't state otherwise and assuming this condition started to happen after you bent the rod.
